Supported by more than four decades of experience in business management, Mr. Gould is the former chair, president, and executive officer of the Gould Paper Corp in New York City, a position he fulfilled for many years, beginning in 1969. During his tenure at his eponymous company, he also served as the chair of Price & Pierce. He was also Chairman and President of Cinema Group, Inc., a major independent film financing and production company, from 1982 to May 19866.
Before commencing his work at the Gould Paper Corp., Mr. Gould first served as an associate in the corporate finance department of Goldman Sachs in New York City in 1961, holding the position for almost 2 years. Thereafter, he was the executive assistant to the senior vice president of operations of Universal American from 1964 to 1965 and secretary-treasurer of the Young Spring & Wire Corp. from 1964 to 1967. Later on, he served the prestigious corporation as executive vice president and chief operating officer, as well as a member of the board of directors of Young and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Daybrook-Ottawa Corp. Mr. Gould also acted as vice president of administration and finance of Universal American from 1968 to 1969 after its merger with Gulf + Western Industries at the beginning of 1968.
Alongside his primary endeavors, Mr. Gould sat on the board of directors and served as a member of the environmental and health and safety committee of the Domtar Corp. in Montreal, Quebec. He was also a limited partner of Hardy & Co. Civically involved as well, Mr. Gould served as a board member with multiple nonprofit and civic organizations, such as the National Symphony Orchestra, the Boy Scouts of America, the Riverdale Country School, United Cerebral Palsy, National Multiple Sclerosis, and the USO. He is also a lifetime member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
To prepare for his career, Mr. Gould pursued formal education at the University of Oxford in 1958, as well as graduating with High Honors from Colgate University in New York, earning a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1960. Completing further coursework at the prestigious Harvard Business School from 1960 to 1961, Mr. Gould subsequently transferred and received his Master of Business Administration from Columbia University in 1964.
To remain abreast of recent developments within his field, Mr. Gould maintained affiliations with numerous organizations, including the American Management Association, where he served as a trustee and on its audit committee from 1997 to 2000. Likewise, he was the former chair of the Paper Distribution Council, former president of the Paper Merchants Association of New York, and former director and printing paper committee member of the National Paper Trade Association. Mr. Gould is also a member of the Harvard Club, Phi Kappa Tau, and was a member of the Young President Organization.
Previously, Mr. Gould was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to serve on the Peace Corps Advisory Council from 1964 to 1968 and to serve as the U.S. representative to the UN East-West Trade Development Commission from 1967 to 1968. He was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to serve as Vice Chairperson of the U.S. President's Export Council and was a member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Export Expansion Subcommittee from 1977 to 1980. He was a National Trustee of the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington, D.C., also serving as a member of its Executive Committee from 1977 to 1999.
Currently, Mr. Gould is a trustee emeritus at Colgate University, a member of the Board of Overseers at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, a Board Member and Member of the Budget Committee of the Roundabout Theatre Company, and a member of the Dean's Fund at the Harvard Business School. He is also Vice Chairperson of the New York City Housing Development Corporation, the largest affordable public housing finance agency in the United States and a position to which Mr. Gould has been appointed by successive New York City Mayors since 1976.
Married to Barbara Clement in 1975 (deceased in 2018), Mr. Gould was born on September 24, 1938 to parents Harry Edward Gould and Lucille Quartucy. The proud father of three children, one of whom died in 2004, he is also grandfather to three grandchildren. Looking toward the future, he intends to conduct more pro bono work and has recently acquired a controlling interest in Denmaur Independent Papers Ltd, the UK's fourth largest paper distributor.
