Inspired by his father, who was a history professor, Dr. Goodsell pursued a career in academia because he desired an intellectually challenging life. Graduating from Kalamazoo College in Michigan, with a Bachelor of Arts in 1954, he subsequently enrolled at Harvard University in Massachusetts, where he earned a Master of Public Administration in 1958, a Master of Arts in 1959, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1961. Dr. Goodsell began his career as an assistant professor at the University of Puerto Rico between 1961 and 1964, later accepting the position of a professor with Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL, from 1966 to 1978.
In 1978, Dr. Goodsell began with his tenure with the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA, initially serving as a professor of public administration prior to attaining the designation of professor emeritus in 2002. A published author, his written works include "Public Servants Studied in Image and Essay: A Fanfare for the Common Bureaucrat," "The New Case for Bureaucracy," "Mission Mystique," "The Case for Bureaucracy," "The American Statehouse," and "American Corporations and Peruvian Politics," among others. Beyond his primary responsibilities, Dr. Goodsell enjoys outdoor recreation and spending quality time with his family.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Goodsell has been presented with the Waldo Award from the American Society for Public Administration in 2003. Previously, he was inducted into the National Academy of Public Administration in 1994. Additionally, Dr. Goodsell has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
