With a career spanning over five decades, Dr. Will is currently retired, having most recently been active as the founder and owner of Battery Vision, Consulting and Innovative Research, in Santa Barbara, California from 1998 to 2011. Prior to this activity, he was a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore in 1998. From 1993 to 1998, he was Visiting Scientist for two years and later appointed manager of Electrochemical Science and Technology at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, California. From 1990 to 1993, Dr. Will was Research Professor at the University of Utah and Director of the National Cold Fusion Institute in Salt Lake City from 1990 until its closure in 1991. His move to Utah followed a 30-year career, from 1960 to 1990, at the General Electric Research Laboratory – later called the GE Research and Development Center – in Schenectady, New York. During this time, he variously served as research scientist, unit manager and project manager. Immediately prior to joining GE, he worked at the United States Army Engineering Research and Development Center in Fort Belvoir, Virginia for 6 months. From 1973 on, Dr. Will repeatedly went on sabatical leaves, spending time teaching and doing academic research at the University of Bonn, Germany; University of Western Australia; Murdoch University in Perth, Australia; University of Utah; and National University in Singapore (NUS). During his stay in Singapore, he was also appointed chair of the international advisory panel at the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering at NUS.
Dr. Will holds 24 patents in his field of electrochemistry. In 1975, he was granted the original patent (U.S. patent 3,874,928) on rechargeable nickel-metal hydride batteries employing AB5 compounds. For many years, this type of battery was used by Toyota in their Prius hybrid cars and continues to be the battery of choice for portable electric tools and personal appliances, such as electric tooth brushes. Other notable inventions include an oxygen sensor for space shuttles and advanced positive electrodes for lead acid batteries. Dr. Will has published his work in over 60 articles in refereed journals.
Before embarking on his career, Dr. Will pursued an education at the Technical University of Munich in Germany, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1954 and a Master of Science in physics in 1956. He obtained a Doctorate degree in physical chemistry in 1959 and emigrated to the U.S.A. the same year. He became a member of The Electrochemical Society in 1960 and later served as a division editor of the Society's Journal. He was elected chair of the Society's Physical Electrochemistry Division and later chaired the Honors and Awards Committee. In 1979, he was elected president of The Electrochemical Society.
For excellence in his field, Dr. Will has been the recipient of a number of honors and accolades over the years. First recognized with the Fourth Battery Division Research Award from the Electrochemical Society in 1964, he was also presented with an Industrial Research Award from the Industrial Research Institute in 1975 and a Citation Classic Award from the Institute for Scientific Information in 1984. In light of all his accomplishments, Dr. Will has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
