With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Mr. Benson is best known for having held a number of positions with the Country Music Association, including executive director and chief executive from 1992 to 2005 and associate executive director from 1979 to 1991, and chief strategic officer from 2006 to 2008. Earlier in his career, Mr. Benson was the vice president of the Benson Co. from 1970 to 1978. Since retiring from CMA in 2008, he has been an entertainment industry advisor to companies and individuals.
Mr. Benson began his career as a student at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1967. Following this accomplishment, he went on to join the United States Army, serving from 1967 to 1970. Mr. Benson is an alumnus of Leadership Music and Leadership Nashville. During his career he maintained affiliations with the Recording Academy, the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences and the American Society of Association Executives. As a volunteer leader, he served on the boards of numerous industry and community organizations.
Throughout his career, Mr. Benson has been recognized for his contributions. Named Tennessean of the Year by the Nashville Tennessean in 2005, he was also decorated with a Bronze Star by the United States Army for his service in Vietnam. In light of all his accomplishments, Mr. Benson has previously been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
