After completing service in the United States Army between 1961 and 1964, Mr. Wangsness graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in technical agriculture in 1965. Soon thereafter, he began his career as a farmer while earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Luther College in Decorah, IA in 1968. Mr. Wangsness concluded his academic efforts at the University of Iowa in 1971, obtaining a Master of Arts in economics.
During this time, Mr. Wangsness worked briefly as a teaching assistant at the University of Iowa between 1970 and 1971. He later served in the roles of an instructor of agriculture, an instructor of computers and an instructor of economics for Northeast Iowa Community College between 1972 and 1991. Furthermore, Mr. Wangsness contributed as a visiting assistant professor of economics for Luther College in Decorah, from 1986 to 1991 and an economics faculty member for Upper Iowa University from 1996 to 2001.
Mr. Wangsness has found further success as the president and the chief executive officer of Quality Organic Producer Cooperative since 2000. Additionally, he maintained his involvement as the President of the Prairie's Edge Sustainable Wood Cooperative from 2001 to 2003. In relation to his primary responsibilities, he was active as the president of the Ostrich Producers Co-Op of the Midwest and a consultant for a Small Business Development Corp., in Dubuque, IA from 1988 to 2002.
An expert in the field, Mr. Wangsness has authored articles published in professional journals. Civically, he has participated on the board of directors for the Northeast Iowa Research Center in Nashua, IA since 2009. To remain aware of changes in the field, Mr. Wangsness maintains his affiliation with the soil by farming together with his son, Ryan, on their organic farm.
