Mr. Scott is presently a senior counsel at Choate Hall & Stewart LLP in Boston, where he has practiced law for forty years. He was hired as an associate in 1975, became a partner in 1986 and senior counsel in 2018. For most of the 1990s, he served as head of the firm's Litigation Department. His practice has focused on complex civil litigation, white collar criminal defense, and, most recently, major insurance coverage litigation. He has litigated cases for major clients in courts around the country and is an experienced trial lawyer. In addition to the areas in which Mr. Scott has practiced, Choate also has practices in the areas of private equity, M & A, finance and restructuring, wealth management, patent, and life sciences and technology.

After graduating from Williams College cum laude in 1968, Mr. Scott served three years as an officer in the US Navy, which included sea duty on the destroyer USS Charles H. Roan (DD853). Following the Navy, Mr. Scott attended Columbia Law School, graduating in 1974. Mr. Scott's first job as a lawyer was as law clerk to US District Judge Frank J. Murray in Boston. From there, he joined Choate in 1975. From 1978 through 1983, Mr. Scott served as an Assistant US Attorney in Boston, working in the Special Investigations Unit of the US Attorney's Office, where he investigated and prosecuted public corruption crime. Among his more noteworthy cases were the convictions of a powerful state senator for abuse of office and the head of the Boston Real Estate Department for evading taxes by not reporting income from bribes.

Since his return to Choate in 1983, Mr. Scott's practice has involved a wide range of civil and criminal cases. He defended major Boston banks from federal criminal charges. He represented an alleged Iranian arms merchant who was charged with violating the arms export laws. He defended the largest national commodity futures company in civil RICO litigation. In state tax litigation, he obtained the largest individual tax refund ($47 million) in Massachusetts history. In eminent domain litigation against the Defense Department, he exposed the government's intentional failure to follow proper contracting practices. His pro bono work included defense of murder cases. Beginning in the late 1990s, Mr. Scott began to focus on insurance coverage litigation around the country for major national insurers. As senior counsel, Mr. Scott now represents immigrants in political asylum cases.

Mr. Scott is a member of the bars of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the US Supreme Court, the First Circuit Court of Appeals, the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and several other federal appeals courts and district courts. He has also been a member of the Boston, Massachusetts, and American Bar Associations.

His public service and community activities include membership on the Criminal Justice Act Board for the District of Massachusetts, the Governor's Education Management Accountability Board, judicial selection committees for the District of Massachusetts and the First Circuit Court of Appeals, the New England Legal Foundation Massachusetts Advisory Council, the Massachusetts Appleseed Foundation Board of Directors, the Community Rowing Inc. Boathouse Fundraising Committee, and the Vestry of the Society of King's Chapel. He is the author of the treatise "Computer and Intellectual Property Crime: State and Federal Law" (BNA Books 2001), as well as numerous articles on a range of legal topics.

Born in 1947 in Auckland, New Zealand to American parents, John and Leona Scott, Mr. Scott moved with his family to Sydney, Australia in 1952, and then to the United States when the family returned in 1957. Mr. Scott and his wife of more than 50 years, Susan Campbell, were married in Boston in 1968. Their son, Matthew Scott, and his wife Bethany are the proud parents of a son, Souther, and a daughter, Sawyer. When he is not occupied by legal matters, Mr. Scott can often be found rowing his single scull on the Charles River, where he has participated in 20 Head of the Charles Regattas.

For excellence in his career, Mr. Scott has received a number of accolades. At Columbia Law School, he was recognized as a James Kent Scholar. For his service as an Assistant US Attorney, he received a certificate of achievement from the US Department of Justice. In 2014, he was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Coverage Counsel. In 2018, he was named a Fellow in the Access to Justice Program of the Boston Bar Association. In light of all of his accomplishments, Mr. Scott has previously been cited in more than 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
