Supported by many years of professional excellence, Dr. Tseng has spent her entire career with the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. From 1997 to 1998, she was acting coordinator of the Chinese Language Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign when she was a doctoral student there. In 1999 she joined the University of Virginia as a lecturer of Chinese. Holding the position of director of the Shanghai Chinese language study abroad program from 2002 to 2004, she has been the director of the Virginia STARTALK Chinese Teacher and Student Academy since 2008. Progressing to associate professor of Chinese in 2014, she was appointed as the inaugural director of the Institute of World Languages at the University of Virginia the same year. She provides visionary leadership to advocate and promote world languages and cultures and bring them to the forefront of global education. In 2018, Dr. Tseng attained the role of full professor of Chinese.
An expert in her field, Dr. Tseng holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from National Taiwan Normal University, and a Master of Arts in English as an international language and Doctor of Philosophy in second language acquisition and teacher education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In order to stay abreast of changes in the field, she affiliates herself with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and the Chinese Language Teachers Association. Utilizing her vast knowledge, Dr. Tseng has published three books: "AP Chinese Language and Culture Teacher's Guide, published by the College Board in the U.S." "Promoting Professionalism in Teaching AP Chinese," published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press in Beijing, China and "A Handbook of Tasks and Rubrics for Teaching Mandarin Chinese," published by Phoenix Tree Publishing.
Miao-fen Tseng is one of national influential figures in creating and shaping the AP Chinese curricular framework and audit requirements. Many K-16 Chinese language teachers have greatly benefitted from her quality training and become regional leaders and excellent Chinese language educators.
For her professional accomplishments, Dr. Tseng has been presented with a number of honors and accolades. Presented with the Federal STARTALK Award every year since 2008, she was also notably presented with the Jefferson Trust Award in 2018 and the FLAVA Helen Warriner-Burke Distinguished Service Award in Foreign Languages in 2016, among several others.
