WESTPORT, CT, May 10, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Jean-Francois Geschwind, MD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Geschwind celebrates many years of extraordinary accomplishments in his professional field, including a remarkable clinical expertise in the field of liver cancer, scientific achievements, leadership qualities, mentor and the credentials and successes he has accrued during his academic career. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Geschwind developed an interest in medicine and science through his early love of biology. After having attended the University of Pennsylvania to ease his transition into a new life in the United States from France, he earned his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed his residency training in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of California at San Francisco as a Resident-Scholar sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) which allowed him to dedicate a year of his residency to research. During that year, he focused his research on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, published many scientific manuscripts, earned his first research award and more importantly, learned how to manage and run a research laboratory. He then pursued his fellowship training in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine before joining the faculty as an Assistant Professor. Shortly after, he was appointed the Director of the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology and a few years later, he was promoted to Professor of Radiology, Surgery, and Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Under his leadership, the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology underwent massive growth, both in terms of clinical activities and research. As a physician, he concentrated his efforts on treating hepatic cancer and more generally, focused on the nascent field of Interventional Oncology, which he helped develop into a major new field of medicine. He founded the Center of Oncologic Interventions, which utilized revolutionary imaging technology in collaboration with Philips Health Care (partly supported by funding from the NIH) to visualize tumors, target them with exquisite precision and as a result treat them more effectively. After 19 years at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Geschwind was recruited to Yale School of Medicine to become the Chairman of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, Radiologist in Chief at Yale-New Haven Hospital and Professor of Radiology and Medicine (Oncology). While there, he created a new research laboratory dedicated to Interventional Oncology and received a major grant from the NIH for research on targeting and imaging of the tumor microenvironment. Dr. Geschwind is a highly experienced, talented and compassionate physician and extraordinary innovator. He has published almost 300 scientific manuscripts in the most highly-rated medical journals, wrote the first textbook dedicated to Interventional Oncology -a new and exciting branch of medicine- and co-edited the textbook of reference in Interventional Radiology, namely, Abram's Angiography, created a company based on a drug he discovered with his colleagues while on faculty at Johns Hopkins to treat cancer and treated clinically over 2000 patients afflicted by liver cancer in his career.
He is currently the Director of Oncology at USA Vein Clinics where he is responsible for the development of specialized centers dedicated to the care of cancer patients using minimally invasive image –guided procedures, known as interventional oncology procedures. He has devoted the last decade of his career to the development of Interventional Oncology both as a professor at Johns Hopkins University and at Yale School of Medicine during his tenure as Chairman of the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging. Dr. Geschwind served as the first President of the Society of Interventional Oncology. These outpatient Interventional Oncology Centers will contribute to improving the lives of thousands of cancer patients and provide such patients access to cutting edge Interventional Oncology procedures, provided in an outpatient setting, thereby decreasing costs dramatically.
Dr. Geschwind is recognized internationally as an expert and key opinion leader in liver cancer. He was the lead or co-investigator on more than 50 clinical trials testing innovative treatments for patients with liver cancer funded by pharmaceutical companies, foundations and/or the NIH. He also received multiple patents for research on a new promising drug that targets a specific pathway in cancer cells, which allowed him to create a company based on this discovery.
As a testament to his scientific success and accomplishments, Dr. Geschwind has received many awards throughout his career including among others, the Annual Memorial Award from the Association of University Radiologists, the Alexander Margulis Award for Excellence in Research, the Society of Interventional Radiology Gary Becker Young Investigator Award, the American Society of Clinical Oncology Merit Award, the American Roentgen Ray Society Fellowship Award, the Boston University School of Medicine and the University of California San Francisco Department of Radiology Alumni Award, the Ernest Ring Academic Development Program from the Society of Interventional Radiology and the Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen Honorary Award from the European Society of Radiology. In 2012, he was inducted into the Academy of Radiology Research from the Radiology Society of North America, the highest recognition for radiologists. Dr. Geschwind was visiting professor and has given numerous lectures and keynote speeches including named lectures at various prestigious institutions such as (among others) the NIH, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, University of Pennsylvania, MD Anderson Cancer Center, the University of Michigan, Georgetown University, Brown University, Yonsei University, Seoul National University, Malaysia Cancer Center, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Geschwind has also been recognized as a Top Doctor by US News and World Report. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology since 1998.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Geschwind has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
