Emanuel S. "Ves" Lawbaugh was born in St. Marys, Missouri in 1935. While at Regis College he was a member of the freshman basketball team and varsity baseball team. Upon graduation in 1957 he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and spent two years on active duty. He returned to Missouri to coach swimming, boxing, and track at Missouri Military Academy. A year later he was hired as head coach for football, basketball, and baseball at St. Vincent High School in Perryville, Missouri. Lawbaugh was named "Old Settlement Conference Coach of the Year" in 1961.
Dr. Lawbaugh resumed his career as a captain in the United States Marine Corps in 1963, advancing through the grades to lieutenant colonel in 1974. Retiring from the military in 1981, he served as a plans officer for the Marine Corps Education Center in Quantico, Virginia, from 1976 to 1978, commanding officer with the Marine Wing Communications Squadron in Okinawa, Japan, from 1978 to 1980, and director of the Defense Electrical Analysis Center in Annapolis, Maryland, from 1980 to 1981. He cites the highlight of his military career to be when he spent more than 16 weeks in a military hospital in Guam after being wounded in action in August 1969. After his hospitalization, he returned to Vietnam, where he used a cane to complete his tour. Dr. Lawbaugh is proud of his perseverance during this time.
Alongside his military career, Dr. Lawbaugh has boasted an extensive career in the field of law. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he served in a private practice in Yankton, South Dakota, from 1984 to 1985 while also acting as dean of admissions and financial aid at Yankton College. From 1985 to 1990, he was the director of development at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. Since 1990, he has hosted a second private practice in Westville, Oklahoma, having also been a national judge advocate with the Military Order of the Purple Heart from 2012 to 2018. During his tenure, he also served a stint as a professor of organization behavior at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and as a professor of management at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.
Delving into law due to the influence of the book "The Trial of Steven Truscott," Dr. Lawbaugh aspired to become a lawyer in an effort to treat people better than Mr. Truscott was treated during his trial. Earning a Bachelor of Science from Regis College in Denver, Colorado, in 1957, he subsequently received a Master of Education from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1962 and a Doctor of Education from the University of Mississippi in Oxford in 1972. Later on, he also obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 1983. Dr. Lawbaugh has since been admitted to practice law in Nebraska, South Dakota and Oklahoma.
The author of "A Survey of Marine Corps General Education Services" and contributor of articles to professional journals, Dr. Lawbaugh maintains affiliation with the American Bar Association, the Nebraska State Bar Association, the South Dakota Bar Association and the Oklahoma Bar Association. He also holds membership with the Marine Corps Association, Kiwanis International, where he has served two terms as president of the Fayetteville chapter since 1993, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart, where he was presented the National Commander's Award for Excellence in 2018.
In light of his many accomplishments in both law and the military, Dr. Lawbaugh was decorated with a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star with V, a Vietnam Honor Medal, a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He was also the recipient of a Service Award from the American Red Cross and was inducted into the Arkansas Military Veterans' Hall of Fame. Likewise, the Marine Corps Association has honored Dr. Lawbaugh with a Fitness Award.
Married to wife Sonja with 4 children, 7 step-children, 34 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, Dr. Lawbaugh enjoys many hobbies, including traveling, swimming, playing basketball, reading and coin collecting. He has been highlighted in the ninth edition of Who's Who in American Law, as well as in multiple editions of Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. Dr. Lawbaugh and his wife Sonja have traveled to all seven continents and 133 countries.
