Raised in a family comprised of several school teachers, he initially pursued an education at Morgan State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1971. Briefly serving as a substitute teacher for the Baltimore City Public Schools, Mr. Fernandez concluded his studies with postgraduate coursework in forensic science at the George Washington University.
Certified as a crime scene investigation expert as well as a diplomate of various courses in the crime scene investigation field, Mr. Fernandez began his career as a crime laboratory technician in the mobile unit of the Baltimore Police Department from 1971 to 1979. He later excelled as a crime laboratory technician supervisor in the mobile unit of the Baltimore Police Department from 1980 until his retirement in 2011. He was also part of one of the first civilian-led CSI groups in America. In order to remain aware of developments in his field, Mr. Fernandez maintains affiliation with the Vanguard Justice Society, Inc.
As a testament to his accomplishments, Mr. Fernandez has been thoroughly celebrated over the course of his impressive career. Accepting a Special Service Commendation with ribbon in 1999 and 2008, he was presented with a Certificate for Service from the Baltimore Police Department in 2011. Furthermore, he has been honored with two Letters of Commendation from the Director of the Laboratory Division of the Baltimore City Police as well as a Unit Citation with a Ribbon from the Baltimore Police Department. Looking toward the future, Mr. Fernandez plans to spend time with his family in his retirement while giving back to those in need.
