Dr. Chandan is the president of Global Technologies, Inc., in Coon Rapids, MN, a consulting company in the field of food science and technology. Serving in his role since 1994, he formerly spent 10 years as a principal scientist for General Mills, Inc., in Minneapolis, MN. He also worked for such organizations as Land O' Lakes, Inc., as the associate director of corporate research and development and the Purity Cheese Company as vice president of protein production and technical services. Furthermore, Dr. Chandan spent time teaching and working at several institutions. He taught within the department of food science and human nutrition at Michigan State University, where he was responsible for guiding six M.S. and three Ph.D. students. He was also a research assistant and associate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a lecturer at the National Dairy Research Institute and Panjab University in India. He has been working in the field of food science for more than 60 years.
A former advisor for the Food and Agriculture Organization and United Nations, Dr. Chandan also served as a consultant in the field, expert witness for numerous court cases, and external examiner for the Indian Institute of Technology, among other organizations. He is a lifetime member of the Indian Dairy Association and the American Dairy Science Association and a longtime member of the Institute of Food Technologists, Sigma Xi and Gamma Sigma Delta.
Dr. Chandan has written extensively in his field. He has authored chapters to 66 books, including "Handbook of Animal-Based Fermented Food and Beverage Technology," co-authored "Technology of Indian Milk Products" in 2002, and authored "Dairy-Based Ingredients" in 1997. He has edited multiple books over the years as well, including "Dairy Processing and Quality Assurance," "Manufacturing Yogurt and Fermented Milks" and "Daily Ingredients for Food Processing." In addition to books, Dr. Chandan has contributed approximately 65 articles to refereed journals, 24 non-refereed articles and 56 abstracts, has given numerous scientific talks and has served as an invited speaker at 23 national and international conferences and seminars.
Honored multiple times throughout his career, Dr. Chandan notably received two Best Paper Awards by the Indian Dairy Association in 1992 and 2001, an Inventor's Certificate of Commendation Governor's Award from the State of Minnesota in 1989 and a Nordica International Award from the American Cultured Dairy Products Institute in 1982. He has been included in multiple professional publications, including the American Biographical Institute as One of 1,000 World Leaders of Scientific Influence in 2005 and One of 2,000 Outstanding Scientists of the 20th Century in 1999. Impressively, he was also named International Man of the Year for 1992-1993. He has also been named to the International Biographical Centre with a Men of Achievement Award in 1993.
Born and raised in India, Dr. Chandan later earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and physics, with honors, and a Master of Science in chemistry, with honors, from Panjab University. Relocating to the United States in 1959, he soon after completed a Doctor of Philosophy in dairy manufacturing and chemistry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Married to his wife Premila Chandan, he has three children and seven grandchildren.
