He pursued changes in policy governing people injured in events like the Postal Anthrax Attack so that systems could be in place when bioterrorism occurs. His building of coalitions and lobbying of the state and federal government led to policy changes and laws written in the response to new types of disasters.
For 15 years after the attack Tyler Cymet, DO researched anthrax, anthrax exposure and the sequelae of anthrax. In 2016 the story of the Postal Anthrax Attack was brought to a close with an understanding of how it was spread and damaged those who came in contact with it. Dr. Cymet as part of a team of military physicians and researchers published a complete and definitive description on anthrax diffusion and infection through aerosolization that occurred mostly through postal spread. He was able to discover what was missed during the initial anthrax attack, so that we will be prepared in the future. Bringing the study to a conclusion with answers published and accepted in the scientific world as a complete understanding of how the bioterrorist attack caused such significant damage is unique for a physician who focuses on practicing medicine, or for research to provide answers in only fifteen years. Working with the military and academic researchers and forging new partnerships for research were critical to his success.
This model of listening to and trusting his patients has allowed Dr. Cymet to advance several new ideas including describing a new genetic syndrome dubbed Erondu-Cymet Syndrome, questioning how HPV infection occurs in the body and causes damage and other clinical observations. His eye for interesting medical cases advanced science, and the stories were found interesting by the general public as well. Writing up the stories for newspapers and television brought Dr. Cymet's work to the attention of the general public.
Stories written by Dr. Cymet started to appear in the Waterbury Republican American in the late 1980's and early 1990's. In the mid 1990's Dr. Cymet's stories were picked up by The New York Times News Syndicate which ran columns by him for two years. The Discovery Channel also picked up a number of his stories which were turned into television shows for the Dr. Know Show and Untold Stories of the ER.
In search of adventure, Dr. Cymet pursued work in disaster zones where he could make a difference. He organized care teams after a tornado hit Arkadelphia, Arkansas, an earthquake in El Salvador, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and Mississippi, and the disaster of drug abuse in the inner city in Baltimore and made multiple visits to Haiti, Nicaragua and Guatemala.
Much of his disaster work was done through Docare International, and organization of which he became National President. During his tenure leading the organization he transformed the group from an episodic assister in disasters, to one that established continuity clinics on the ground in areas of disaster to provide long-term benefit to an area, creating teams of local and foreign healthcare providers. He worked through Docare to raise the funds for and established clinics in Guatemala and Nicaragua and turned healthcare clinics into teaching sites where osteopathic and allopathic medical students would share responsibility to provide care and help the clinics and the community.
The expertise he gained from the international work brought him to Bulgaria to consult on the transformation of the healthcare system there, to Korea, and currently to Cairo, Egypt, where he is working to establish curriculum and assessment strategies for the Armed Forces College of Medicine in Cairo, Egypt.
In 2008 Dr. Cymet moved from full time practice to an academic role and became the Chief of Clinical Education for the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. In that role he has focused on testing of medical school students and has helped to make objective testing in the clinical years standard for all osteopathic medicine schools. He has worked to introduce competency-based education, entrustable professional activities, milestones, and active learning as standard for all osteopathic medical schools. He also standardized the curriculum in osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine for all DO medical schools publishing "A Teaching Manual for Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine". Dr. Cymet led the project to enter the unique language of osteopathic medicine into SNOMED so that it is available in electronic medical records and is standardized. Thissix year project has resulted in multiple books published and has had the Glossary of Osteopathic Terminology accepted by professional associations as the standard language for the medical profession both nationally and internationally. He also published a video textbook on manipulation with Lecturio.
Using previous partners, Dr. Cymet brought the military and osteopathic medical schools together and increased military tuition and research support and scholarships to osteopathic medical schools by over two hundred million dollars over the past ten years.
A prolific writer, Dr. Cymet has published 8 books on medical topics ranging from the Ad Dictionary of Drug User Terminology, Genomics, Manipulation, Humanities in Medicine, Empowerment, and Inner Strength. He has also published over 80 scientific articles on topics ranging from hiccups to HPV, and fibromyalgia and joint cracking.
Dr. Cymet has also served as President of the Maryland State Medical Society, which is a 9000 member professional association for physicians and part of the American Medical Association (AMA), Medical Director for Sinai Community Care where he oversaw all aspects of care for ten thousand patients, and ran a hospital section with over 100 physicians.
He has been recognized nationally as the Top Educator by the American Osteopathic Foundation, and as the Top Educator in the Country by the Student Osteopathic Medical Association. The AMA also recognized him on two occasions with the McLaughlin Award for Editorial Excellence for articles he has written and journals he has edited.
Before training in general internal medicine in the residency at Yale University School of Medicine Dr. Cymet received undergraduate degrees from Emory University, and his DO degree from the Kirpan Patel Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also did research training at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Midwestern University in Chicago, and received academic certificates from Johns Hopkins in Clinical Investigation, Business of Medicine, and Faculty Development. He currently holds the title of Associate Professor at both the New York Institute of Technology and Michigan State University.
Tyler Cymet is married to Holly Cymet, PhD a biophysicist working for Booz Allen Hamilton and is the father of Ilana Cymet. He resides in Owings Mills, MD and Washington, D.C.
