Currently the President of the Eating Recovery Center and Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Dr. Mehler celebrates a career that spans more than three decades.
Dr. Mehler started out as an intern and resident at the University of Colorado Health Science Center, initially working from 1983 to 1987. He went on to serve the same institution as associate professor of medicine for the department of medicine, associate dean of the School of Medicine, and Glassman Endowed Professor of Internal Medicine, also serving Columbine Hospital as director of internal medicine and addiction medicine. Throughout his career, Dr. Mehler also worked for Denver Health as chief of internal medicine, chief medical officer, medical director, chief clinical officer and attending physician, having founded the ACUTE center in 2004, the country's center of excellence for medical stabilization for patients with extreme forms of eating disorders.
Demonstrating considerable professional drive, Dr. Mehler has also served as chair of the ACUTE joint management committee, chair of the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals, on the admissions committee for the Eating Recovery Center, and on the medical executive committee for the Eating Recovery Center and on the Colorado State Board of Health, among other instances of involvement. He has also served as vice president of the Colorado Prevention Center and on the editorial board for the International Journal of Eating Disorders. Impressively, Dr. Mehler has given more than 180 presentations and lectures in his field.
Inspired to pursue his career out of a desire to help people, Dr. Mehler has been the recipient of more than 20 awards and recognitions in his field, including the University of Colorado School of Medicine Florence Sabin Award for Outstanding Contributions to Medical Research, the Academy of Earing Disorders Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Donor Alliance Ending the Wait Senior Leader Award. Notably, he was also the recipient of the Denver Health Medical Center Third Annual Senior Plus Dr. Madeline White Excellence in Geriatrics Award. He is particularly proud to have received the University of Colorado School of Medicine Silver and Gold Award. Dr. Mehler co-wrote "Medical Complications of Eating Disorders," publishing the third edition in 2017, and he has contributed several hundred articles to professional journals in his field.
