A native of Helsinki, Finland, Dr. Lyytinen pursued an education at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1976, a Master of Arts in 1977 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1986. He began his career as a researcher for the University of Stockholm between 1981 and 1982, before accepting the role of a principal researcher with the Academy of Finland from 1983 to 1985. Dr. Lyytinen further found success as a visiting researcher at the London School of Economics in 1986, and a professor with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 1993 to 1994.
After his relocation to the United States in 2001, Dr. Lyytinen worked as an Iris S. Wolstein professor and a distinguished university professor with the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, from 2001 until his departure in 2019. Earlier in his career, he also served as a dean, a faculty member with information technology department for Georgia State University, as well as a professor at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland. An expert in the field, he has contributed as an editor and a contributor to several professional and academic journals. Between 1972 and 1973, Dr. Lyytinen completed service in Finnish Army with the 3rd Infantry Division.
Additionally, Dr. Lyytinen earned post-doctoral degrees from Umea University in Sweden during 2008, the Copenhagen Business School in 2016, and the Lappeenranta University of Technology in 2017. A testament to his success, he has been presented with the Leo Award in 2016, the Silver Core Award in 1998, and the Association for Information Systems Fellow Award in 2004. He is additionally proud to have been honored with the Medal of 1st Class Knight from the Order of White Rose in Finland. To remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Lyytinen maintains affiliation with the International Federation for Information Processing, for which he has excelled as a committee member and a chairperson.
