As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Recognized as a professor emerita at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain since 2001, Dr. Shmurak continued to teach as an adjunct professor with the aforementioned university until 2009. First working for Central Connecticut State University as an assistant professor in 1989, she progressed to the posts of associate professor in 1994 and full professor in 1998. Inspired to seek a career in science by her father's and brothers' involvement in the field of medicine, Dr. Shmurak has also possessed a great love of reading and writing since she was a small child. For excellence in teaching, she was the recipient of an Excellence in Equity Award from the American Association of University Women in 1994. Shmurak, raising her incredibly strong daughter, Jill Susannah Shmurak, going back to graduate school for her PhD, and retiring early to write fiction. Dr. Shmurak considers her crowning achievement to be the occasion of her 70th birthday party, when so many of her former students from Dalton, Miss Porter's School, and Central Connecticut State University attended to share stories about how she had influenced their lives.
