Richard L. Hay began his 63-year residency at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 1969 as principal scenic and theatre designer.

With over 60 years of professional experience, Mr. Hay has found success as a designer for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR. He earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA, in 1952 and 1955. During 1953, he began a part time career as a technical director and designer for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. In 1957 he also began a stint with Stanford University, serving as the scenic design instructor and associate professor from 1957 to 1969. He began his 63-year residency at the OSF in 1969 as principal scenic and theatre designer. Mr. Hay also accepted the position of the associate artistic director for design with the Denver Center Theatre Company from 1984 to 1991.
Throughout his career, Mr. Hay also worked as a freelance scenic designer for various venues across the United States. These include Guthrie Theater, the American Conservatory Theater, the Missouri Repertory Theater, the Mark Taper Forum, and the Eisenhower Theatre, among others. To remain aware of changes in the field, Mr. Hay maintains affiliation with United Scenic Artists, The League of Historical American Theaters, and the Institute of Theatre Technology, for which he served on the board of directors from 1994 to 1997.
A published author, Mr. Hay's book, "A Space for Magic: Stage Settings by Richard L. Hay," was written in 1979. He also exhibited work at the Prague Quadrennial in 1999 and 2003 as well as at the U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology many times from 1975 through 1990. As a testament to his accomplishments in the field, Mr. Hay was the recipient, among other awards, of the Governor's Award for the Arts in the State of Oregon in 1989 and he was a Fulbright grantee in 1955. Outside of his professional career, he enjoys book collecting.
