Dr. Catherine Fenselau has excelled as a chemistry professor and scientist for over five decades.

With many years of professional experience and an extensive educational background to her credit, Dr. Fenselau has excelled as a chemistry professor and scientist for over five decades. After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Bryn Mawr College in 1961, she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University in 1965. Subsequently, she began her career as a research scientist with the University of California, Berkeley from 1965 to 1967. She further progressed from an instructor to the position of a full professor with the John Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD between 1967 and 1987. Soon thereafter, Dr. Fenselau began her tenure with the University of Maryland, holding the posts of a chairman and professor for the department of chemistry and biochemistry, before her appointment as a distinguished university professor emerita in 2018.

Throughout her career, Dr. Fenselau served as a consultant for the Food and Drug Administration, the United States Army, the United States Department of Agriculture, the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Additionally, she was a member of the board of directors for the Maryland Science Center from 1998 to 2010. Her hard work and dedication led to a number of achievements in her field. She was responsible for the successful use of a new computer program to interpret information on the intensive mass spectra of branched proteins, revealing that acyl-linked glucuronides can react with proteins to produce toxic side effects, as well as the first identification of the active human metabolite of the widely used anti-tumor agent cyclophosphamide. Moreover, Dr. Fenselau holds the distinction of being the ninth woman to become a full professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

A testament to her exemplary accomplishments, Dr. Fenselau has been the recipient of several accolades and honors. Dr. Fenselau has been presented with the Hillebrand Prize, the Garvan-Olin Medal, the Maryland Chemist Award, the Frank H. Field and Joe L. Franklin Award, among others. As an editor, she has been involved in the curation of a number of written works, including "Analytical Chemistry" and "Biomedical Environmental Mass Spectrometry." She has also authored myriad articles published in professional journals. To remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Fenselau has maintained involvement in several professional organizations, such as the Human Proteome Organization, the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, the American Society for Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
