Accruing 56 years of industry experience to his credit, Mr. Wachenfeld most recently served of counsel at Tompkins, McGuire & Wachenfeld in Newark, New Jersey, from 1984 to 2010. He began his professional career as a professor of law in the Jersey City division of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in 1954, remaining in this position for two years before joining the law firm, Lum, Biunno & Tompkins, for one year. Mr. Wachenfeld then served as vice president and associate general counsel of Prudential Financial Inc. from 1965 to 1984 and president of the Charles Hayden Foundation in New York from 1968 to 1997, also chairing the latter from 1997 to 1999.
Prior to embarking on his professional path, Mr. Wachenfeld pursued a formal education at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1947. He then attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where he obtained a Bachelor of Laws in 1950. Following these accomplishments, he enlisted in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1956. Mr. Wachenfeld became involved in his profession because his father, William A. Wachenfeld, was an attorney and he was simply following in his footsteps.
Active in his local community, Mr. Wachenfeld served as commissioner of public affairs in Orange, New Jersey, from 1956 to 1958 and president of the Essex County Park Commission from 1960 to 1965. Additionally, he chaired the board of trustees of the Newark Academy from 1972 to 1980 and was a member of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority from 1980 to 1988 and 1991 to 1994. He was also on the board of governors of the New Jersey Historical Society from 1981 to 1983, on the advisory board for the Wildlife Conservation Society from 1983 to 1993, and a trustee of the Liberty Science Center from 1988 to 1993. Since 2000, Mr. Wachenfeld has volunteered with the Massachusetts Audubon Society, which protects 36,500 acres of land throughout Massachusetts, saving birds and other wildlife, and making nature accessible to all with its wildlife sanctuaries and 20 nature centers.
Outside of his primary trade, Mr. Wachenfeld keeps updated of trends in his field through his affiliations with many related organizations. A fellow of the American Bar Foundation, he has maintained involvement with the American Bar Association, the New Jersey Bar Association and the Essex County Bar Association. From 1992 to 1997, he served as a commodore for the HC Yacht Club and on the board of directors for the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers. Mr. Wachenfeld has also been active with the Eastward Ho Country Club.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Wachenfeld has been selected for inclusion in the 13th edition of Who's Who in American Law and several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the East. Now in retirement, he resides in Massachusetts and is the proud father of three children, William S. (deceased), Robin A., and John C. Mr. Wachenfeld also enjoys spending time with his five wonderful grandchildren.
