Accruing 32 years of industry experience to his credit, Mr. Boothroyd is currently retired, having most recently served as the president and director of the New England General Life Insurance Co. between 1981 and 1987. He began his professional career by joining the staff at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. in 1953, remaining in this position for four years before transferring to New England Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Boston from 1957 to 1987. During this time, he served as the company's vice president from 1967 to 1977, senior vice president of pension operations from 1977 to 1982, and executive vice president from 1983 to 1987. In addition to this tenure, Mr. Boothroyd directed New England Variable Life Insurance Co. from 1984 to 1987 and served as director and president of New England Pension and Annuity Co. between 1980 and 1987.
Prior to embarking on his professional path, Mr. Boothroyd enlisted in the United States Army from 1946 to 1947. After completing his service, he pursued a formal education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics, with honors, in 1952 and a Master of Arts in 1953. He became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in 1956. Following these academic honors, Mr. Boothroyd became certified through the executive management program at Columbia University in New York in 1964 and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971. In 1976, he became an enrolled actuary.
Active in his local community, Mr. Boothroyd served on the board of directors for the New England chapter of the American Diabetes Association from 1979 to 1984 and the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Massachusetts from 1980 to 1988, where he also served as vice chair of the executive committee from 1985 to 1988. Active with the Handel and Haydn Society on its board of governors for a decade, he spent time as the secretary from 1986 to 1994 and an overseer from 1994 to 2003. Additionally, he was on the national campaign committee for the University of Michigan from 1983 to 1990. A prolific writer, Mr. Boothroyd has authored two books, "Hammett Families" in 1983 and "Cockrill Families of Northern Virginia" in 2002 and contributed to the Life and Health Insurance Handbook in 1973.
Outside of his primary trade, Mr. Boothroyd keeps updated of trends in his field through affiliations with numerous related organizations. A fellow of the Society of Actuaries, he has served the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan as vice president of the first district from 1989 to 1991, president from 1991 to 1993, member on the national board of directors from 1997 to 2000 and chair of the national clubs council from 1999 to 2000. A member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society council since 2010, Mr. Boothroyd has also maintained involvement with the Sons of the American Revolution, the American Academy of Actuaries, the International Congress of Actuaries, the Kentucky Historical Society, the Society of Colonial Wars in Massachusetts, and several honor societies.
