As a Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) he founded and has been serving as principal ergonomist for Synergetic Applications in Bloomsbury, New Jersey, since 2002. An expert in the study of human behavior, particularly as it relates to operating equipment and systems, he previously excelled for 17 years as a senior performance technologist for Telcordia Technologies in Piscataway, N.J. He also held several roles for such organizations as Bell Laboratories, AT&T and the System Development Corporation since 1960. During this time, Dr. Williams worked as a consultant for New York University in 1968 and the chair of the technical advisory group to the international organization for standardization in ergonomics of human system interaction between 1987 and 2017. Since 1986, Dr. Williams has further maintained his involvement as a U.S. expert for WG5.
Outside of his work in psychology and ergonomics, Dr. Williams established (with his wife) Delvista Vineyards and was its winemaker between 1982 and 1992. He was also a member of a group of farm winery owners that helped obtain the passage of the New Jersey Farm Winery Act in 1981. Additionally, he was the first person to be issued a farm winery license in New Jersey in 1982. In 1984, he developed and successfully petitioned the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for the establishment of the Central Delaware Valley American Viticultural Area.
A charter member of the American Psychological Society, Dr. Williams is also a member and longtime representative of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society since 1986 and a member of Delta Rho Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi. Locally, he has proudly supported the Boy Scouts of America as both a cubmaster and assistant scoutmaster in Watchung, NY, between 1973 and 1978. Dr. Williams has been notably featured in more than 15 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
Moreover, Dr. Williams completed service in the U.S. Air Force between 1951 and 1955. Pursuing an education at Purdue University, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in psychology in 1958 and a Master of Science in human factors and industrial psychology in 1960. He concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in education at New York University in 1971. Beyond his primary responsibilities, Dr. Williams loves winemaking, studying astronomy, staying fit by bodybuilding and spending time with his family.
