Ellen C. Averill Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    CATAULA, GA, May 20, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Ellen C. Averill with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Averill celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Ms. Averill is a retired school teacher who taught science for more than 25 years. Hired by Decatur City Schools in Decatur, GA, in 1971, she later taught and served as department chair at Kendrick High School in Columbus, GA, between 1980 and 2004. During this time, she was named Teacher of the Year two years in a row and was recognized as a Star Teacher in 1991. During her career, she spent time as a research assistant for the Caretta Research Project sponsored by the Savannah Science Museum in Georgia, was a research associate at the Inhalation Toxicology Research Institute in Albuquerque, NM, taught for the Governor's Honor Program at Valdosta State University and participated in the Woodrow Wilson Biotechnology Institute at Princeton University. She was also the founder of the Georgia Coalition for Math and Science and was selected to participate in NEWMAST, a NASA educational workshop for math and science teachers at the Kennedy Space Center.

Ms. Averill's involvement with the Georgia Science Teachers Association includes serving as District VI Representative (1988-1990), Secondary Representative (1990-1991), President-elect (1991-1992), President (1992-1993), Conference Coordinator for State GSTA Conference (1992), and as the Georgia Science Teachers Education Foundation Chairman (1994-1998). The GSTA named her District Science Teacher of the Year in 1995. She was also a member of the National Science Teachers Association and was the co-founder of the Coalition for Excellence in Science Education (1992-1993). Her contributions to Valley Area School Teachers, which include being a charter member, President-elect (1996-1997) and President (1997-1998) led to her being recognized as District Science Teacher of the Year in 1995. She was a member of the Muscogee Area Literacy Association where she served on several committees and was treasurer (1992-1993), and was a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers, where she was named Outstanding Biology Teacher for 1990-1991. Furthermore, Ms. Averill is active with Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Delta Kappa for which she served as Vice-president (2002-2004) and which named her Science Teacher of the Year in 1992. She is past chair, vice president and president of the Harris County Women's Club. She performed volunteer work with Hope Harbor Battered Women's Shelter between 2004 and 2011, and was named volunteer of the year in 2008.

Since retiring, Ms. Averill received Master Gardener Certification in Alabama in 2005 and Georgia in 2006. This led to many speaking engagements from gardening clubs and other master gardener groups. She has been involved with the Columbus Botanical Garden for 12 years, serving on the board of directors since 2016, participating in various volunteer projects, and chairing its Christmas in the Garden event. As a sign of gratitude, the garden presented her with a certificate of appreciation. She has volunteered for Callaway Gardens, is a former vice president of the Russell County Master Gardeners and is a member of Valley Master Gardeners, the American Hemerocallis Society and the Chattahoochee Valley Daylily Society. She has chaired a number of fall festivals for her neighborhood sub-division and is Daylily Show Chairman this year for their annual Daylily Festival. She is an amateur radio operator (KE4MSQ).

Ms. Averill has been included in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1996, as well as close to 30 editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of American Women. In 1992, she notably invented The Wrap-All.

Originally planning to attend medical school, Ms. Averill instead studied the sciences. Completing a Bachelor of Science at the University of Georgia in 1966, she then spent two years as a graduate teaching assistant from 1966 to 1968, and a graduate research assistant from 1968 to 1971 before completing a Master of Science in 1971. She became a certified teacher at Columbus College (now known as Columbus State University) in 1979, and years later, earned a Specialist in Education degree in 1994. Ms. Averill also become licensed in amateur radio in 1994 and became a certified master gardener in Alabama in 2005 and Georgia in 2006.

Married to her husband George Edmund Averill since 1971, Ms. Averill is the mother of one son. In retirement, she enjoys doing various gardening projects, making greeting cards and china painting, among other hobbies.
