A native of Borojerd, Iran, Dr. Shafii-Mousavi earned a Bachelor of Science from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran in 1971. He began his career as the head of the mathematics department at Razi University that same year, and served as a member of the faculty there until 1975. Dr. Shafii-Mousavi relocated to the United States in 1975, accepting a position as a teaching assistant with the State University of New York. During this time, he attended the State University of New York, Buffalo securing a Master of Arts in 1977 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1979.
Dr. Shafii-Mousavi later joined Indiana University South Bend, holding posts of associate chair of mathematics, assistant professor, and chair of the mathematics and computer science department, and later chair of the Mathematical Sciences Department. He has contributed to the university as a full professor since 2003 and developed actuarial science program and the graduate program in applied mathematics and computer science. Across the discipline, he collaborated with an English professor introduced the connections program and with an economics professor developed the mathematics in action course. He held Teachers Teaching with Technology Institutes for high school teachers 1993-2000 and high school math competitions. He was a program reviewer for mathematics department of Indiana University North West, Indiana University South East, Indiana University East, and Indiana University Kokomo.
Civically, Dr. Shafii-Mousavi was involved with the Iran Higher Education Committee and several local events throughout South Bend, Indiana. A published author, his written works include six books penned in Persian, "Laplace Transforms," released in 1990, and a number of articles and abstracts that have been appeared in professional journals. In recognition of his efforts, he received the Mathematical Association of America Teaching Award, two Indiana University Trustees Teaching Awards, the Indiana University Presidential Award, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Outstanding Advising Award and grants from National Science Foundation and Indiana University.
To remain current with changes in his field, Dr. Shafii-Mousavi maintains affiliation with the American Mathematic Society, the Mathematic Association of America, the Iranian Mathematical Society, and the Indiana University Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching. Outside of his professional endeavors, he enjoys researching, reading, gardening, music, and traveling.
