With 40 years of professional experience to his credit, Mr. Paul is an accomplished Criminal Defense lawyer. Since 1983, he has practiced with the firm of Voyles Zahn & Paul, and precedent iterations, until becoming Of Counsel with the current firm of Voyles Vaiana Lukemeyer Baldwin & Webb. Recognized for his work in DUI defense, he is notable for directing the successful effort of the National College for DUI Defense to attain accreditation by the American Bar Association for its National Board Certification Examination in the area of DUI Defense Law. Mr. Paul was a Founding Member of the National College for DUI Defense (NCDD) in 1995, and served on its Board of Regents for seven years before being named Dean of the NCDD. After serving his tenure as Dean, Paul was named a Fellow of the College. He has maintained his involvement as a Board Certification Committee member in the succeeding years. Mr. Paul was responsible for the creation of the original Board Certification Exam for the National College for DUI Defense.
In addition to practicing criminal defense law, Mr. Paul has contributed as a lecturer for a number of continuing legal education programs, primarily in criminal defense and appellate law, since 1983. He has written volumes of CLE materials for seminars and workshops, including the Summer Sessions of the NCDD conducted at the Harvard Law School. Paul has also written more than 60 appellate briefs over the course of his career, including briefs to the Indiana Supreme and Appellate Courts, the Seventh Circuit United States Court of Appeals, and two briefs in support of Petitions for Certiorari to the United States Supreme Court. Earlier in his career, Mr. Paul served as a deputy prosecutor, prosecuting major-felony narcotics and white collar crime cases.
Mr. Paul earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, in 1970. He graduated law school with a Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from the Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis, in 1976. Licensed to practice law by the Indiana State Bar that same year, he has been admitted to practice by the United States District Courts for the Southern and Northern Districts of Indiana, the Supreme Court of United States and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
Holding an AV-rating from Martindale-Hubbell, Mr. Paul has previously been recognized among the Best Lawyers in Indiana, the Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers. In 2006, he was presented the Erwin-Taylor Award by the NCDD. Mr. Paul is proud of his work on an Indiana case, Hannoy v. State, that overturned non-consensual police blood tests following fatal accidents, in the absence of probable cause.
