With nearly 65 years of professional experience, Mr. Adler was a teacher with the Juilliard School in New York City from 1997 to 2016. Prior to obtaining this role, he was a professor of composition with the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York from 1966 to 1994. During this time, he also served as an honorary professor with the University of Wales in Cardiff from 1984 to 1989 and the eastern regional director of the contemporary music project for the Ford Foundation from 1966 to 1970. Earlier in his career, Mr. Adler was a professor of composition at the University of North Texas from 1957 to 1966 and a music director at Temple Emanu-El in Dallas from 1953 to 1966.

Mr. Adler began his career as a student at Boston University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Music in 1948. Continuing his studies with Harvard University, he earned a Master of Arts in 1950. Following these accomplishments, he served with the United States Army from 1950 to 1952, where he founded and conducted the 7th Army Symphony Orchestra in 1952. Mr. Adler has notably been awarded a number of honorary doctorates from such institutions as Southern Methodist University, Wake Forest University, Saint Mary's College, the St. Louis Conservatory and School for the Arts, and Hebrew Union College at the Jewish Institute of Religion.

A respected voice in his areas of expertise, Mr. Adler has been an active leader in his community as well. Inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, he holds further membership with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, the Music Teachers National Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Phi Beta Kappa Society and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Mr. Adler has also been a grantee of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Mr. Adler is the composer of over 450 published works including five operas, six symphonies, over 40 other orchestral works, 19 works for wind ensemble, 8 string quartets, much other chamber music, 7 oratorios, cantatas and other larger choral works, smaller choral works and songs. He is the author of four books: Choral Conducting (Schirmer Books), Sight Singing (W.W. Norton), The Study of Orchestration (W.W. Norton), the latter has been translated into 8 languages, plus an autobiography called BUILDING BRIDGES WITH MUSIC Pendragon Press) published in 2017. His major music publishers are Theodore Presser, G. Schirmer, Ludwig-Kalmus, Transcontinental Music Publishers, and Southern Music. Over 100 works are available on commercial recordings: NAXOS, LINN, Albany, Chrystal and other labels.

Throughout his career, Mr. Adler has been recognized for his contributions, including having been inducted in the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2008. Named a William Schuman Scholar by the Julliard School, he was also the recipient of six First Prizes from the Texas Composers Contest, the Charles Ives Award and the Lillian Fairchild Award. Furthermore, he has been honored with a Deems Taylor Award and an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award as well as with a Federal Cross of Merit from the German government in 2018. A Guggenheim fellow from 1984 to 1985, Mr. Adler has been named Composer of the Year a grand total of four times, twice by the Music Teachers National Association and twice by the American Guild of Organists.
