C. JoAnn Foust Cardarella has always had a passion for caring for people

An expert in Psychiatric Nursing, Mrs. Cardarella most recently served as the Nurse Manager of Mental Health at Lake Placid Medical Center in Florida from 1992 until her retirement in 1998. She began her professional career as a staff nurse at McLeod Infirmary in Florence, South Carolina, in 1952, remaining in this position for one year. She then transferred to the Durham VA Medical Center in North Carolina from 1953 to 1957 before becoming the head nurse and Director of Nursing at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami from 1957 to 1984, when she retired. In between nursing roles, Mrs. Cardarella was also the owner of the Chocolate Strawberry on Marco Island, Florida, for five years, 1984-1989.
Prior to embarking on her professional path, Mrs. Cardarella graduated with a diploma from the McLeod Infirmary in 1952. She enlisted and served in the United States Air Force Reserves from 1960 to 1962, achieving the rank of captain just prior to resigning her commission. After completing her service, she pursued a formal education at the University of Miami in Florida, earning a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1968. Mrs. Cardarella went on to attend the University of North Carolina, where she obtained a Master of Science in Psychiatric Nursing in 1970.
Mrs. Cardarella had an aunt who was a nurse and her mannerism intrigued her, and she always knew that she was going to be a nurse. Although finance was involved in her decision to be a nurse, her motivation and encouragement from her family helped her solidify her decision. She has always had a passion for caring for people. Outside of her primary trade, she keeps updated of trends in her field through her affiliations with related organizations. She has maintained involvement with the American Nurses Association and Florida Nurses Association. Now in retirement, Mrs. Cardarella resides in Florida, where she enjoys sailing, reading, watching movies, doing needlepoint, playing cards such as Bunco and e-Pack games, and traveling in her spare time.
