Prior to her retirement, she was a sixth-grade teacher for the Muscogee County School District in Columbus from 1968 to 1999. In addition to her primary roles, she has also served as the president of the Free Spirits-Senior Adults at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, a tutor with Our House, on the board of directors with Second Harvest Food Bank and as a delegate for the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. Beginning her career as a student at Auburn University in Alabama, she obtained a Bachelor of Science in education in 1961. Ms. Newsome continued her education with Georgia State University, earning a Master of Education in 1974.
A respected voice in her areas of interest, Ms. Newsome has been an active leader in her community as well. She has been affiliated with the Muscogee County Council of International Reading Association, the Georgia Science Teachers Association and the District VI Science Teachers Association. Ms. Newsome is also a member of the Muscogee Retired Educators Association, the Georgia Retired Educators Association, the United Methodist Women, the Executive Club, the Mr. and Mrs. Club, the Alpha Chi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Educational Sorority and the social sorority Alpha Delta Gamma at Auburn.
For excellence in her career, Ms. Newsome has been recognized with multiple honors and accolades. From 1987 to 1988, she was notably named Reading Teacher of the Year by the International Reading Association (IRA) of Muscogee County, GA.
