For the majority of his career, Dr. Rath excelled as the superintendent of the Materials Science and Technical Division and as the head and the associate director of the Materials Science and Component Technology Directorate at the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC.

Throughout his career, he has also served as an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Maryland. In order to remain aware of developments in metallurgy, he maintains his affiliation with the American Society of Metals, the Washington Academy of Sciences, the Materials Society, the Indian National Academy of Engineering, and the Materials Science and Engineering Academy. Moreover, Dr. Rath is associated with Michigan Technical University, the American Institute of Mining, the Microscopy Society of America, the Indian Institute of Metals, and the National Academy of Engineering of the United States.
As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Rath has authored countless articles published in professional journals, as well as more than 230 technical papers and reports. Contributing on the editorial board of numerous international technical journals, including the Bulletin of Materials Science, the Journal on Materials and Designs, the International Materials Review, and Material Physics and Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Science, he edited and co-edited more than 20 books on diverse topics in materials science and engineering. Finally, Dr. Rath has found success as a speaker for 300 keynote and distinguished lectures worldwide.
For many contributions to his field, Dr. Rath has been celebrated multiple times throughout his field. Most notably, he was presented with the Padma Bhushan Award from the President of India, and the Distinguished Civilian Service Awards from the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Presidents. Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Rath earned a Bachelor of Arts from Utkal University, a Master of Science from Michigan Technological University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
