HUNTSVILLE, AL, May 30, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present John Charles White, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. White celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A historian and educator, Dr. White retired as a professor emeritus at the University of Alabama in Huntsville after teaching on campus for 24 years. Hired in 1967 as an assistant professor, he became a full professor in 1976. He also chaired the history department for 21 years beginning in 1970 and was the director and acting chairman of the languages and literature department for three years beginning in 1988. Prior to his career in Alabama, Dr. White taught for the University of Maryland European Division from 1965 to 1966. Upon his retirement from academia, he spent another 17 years as a European travel consultant until 2008.
Dr. White has authored numerous articles on French administrative history in various professional journals. He was also the editor for Proceedings Consortium on Revolutionary Europe in 1977 and 1981. He has been active as a member and past president of the Alabama Association of Historians and as a member of the Alabama Historical Society, Rotary International and several honor societies. Between 1972 and 1986, he served as director and secretary-treasurer of the Consortium on Revolutionary Europe, an organization that hosts an annual conference for those interested in the field of history and desired to publish the results of their contributions. Locally, Dr. White has lent his time as a committee member of the National Endowment for the Humanities and as a board of directors member of the Alabama Preservation Alliance and the Alabama Humanities Foundation.
Honored with an Award of Merit from the Alabama Preservation Alliance in 1994, Dr. White previously received several awards in 1991, including a Certificate of Appreciation from the Governor of Alabama, a Multi-Cultural Services Recognition Award from the University of Alabama and an Appreciation Award from the University of Alabama Alumni Association. Dr. White was the recipient of research grants from the University of Alabama in 1969, 1970 and 1974, a Duke University travel grant to France in 1963 and a Woodrow Wilson summer grant in 1962. He has been cited in nearly 15 editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
Deciding as an undergraduate student to pursue a career in history after being so impressed by his own history professor, Dr. White switched from pre-law to academia. He received a Bachelor of Arts in history, magna cum laude with exceptional distinction, from Washington and Lee University in 1960, followed by a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from Duke University in 1962 and 1964, respectively. After graduating, he notably served in the U.S. Army Reserve in France between 1964 and 1966 and Fort Campbell, KY, between 1966 and 1967. While in France, he was awarded the City Medals of Dunkirk and Chalon-sur-Saone. Honorably discharged in 1967, he attained the rank of Captain.
Born in Washington, Dr. White later married his wife Carolyn R. West in 1963. Happily married for 55 years, his marriage to his best friend has been his greatest achievement. She has been the most important influence in his life and the best thing that has ever happened to him. In retirement, Dr. White enjoys reading, collecting French faïence and traveling.
