With more than 60 years of professional experience, Ms. Andrews has been an office manager of Massachusetts Indemnity and Life Insurance Company since 1985, an instructor with Prison Fellowship since 1983, president of Believers, Inc., since 1971, and Wang System Administrator with the San Francisco Department of the Treasury since 1982. In addition to her primary roles, she was a music director with Christliches Zentrum in Berlin, Germany, from 1978 to 1981, having also been a music teacher of seminars and workshops, a recording artist, and a gospel promoter.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Andrews was a supervisor with the Department of Social Services from 1968 to 1978 and a secretary with the Oakland Department of Health Service from 1958 to 1969. Furthermore, she served as a disc jockey for "Happy Sounds of the Forever Life" at Station KRE in Berkeley, CA, from 1973 to 1978, having also been a fundraiser with the station from 1972 to 1978. From 1981 to 1982, she was also the executive secretary of Harsh Investment Company.
Ms. Andrews served as a guest directress at Love Center Church in Oakland, CA, for Bishop Walter Hawkins in 2010. Five years earlier, she spent ten days in Sweden on tour with a successful choir. She had a workshop with three different choirs, Stockholm East Gospel Choir, St. Clara Gospel Choir, and Immanuel Gospel Choir. Notably, they appeared on Morning News TV 4 and the Folk Culture Center of Stockholm, Sweden. From 2000 to 2001, she was a music administrator at Acts Full Gospel COGIC in Oakland, CA.
In 1999, the Berlin Community Choir under the direction of Ms. Andrews released a CD entitled JOY. Additionally, they recorded "When the Saints Go Marching In," which later would be placed in every school library in Berlin. She has been involved in benefit concerts for Children's Home Society as a member of the board of directors with the Oakland Youth Chorus in 1986. In 1974, she was in music ministry as a psalmist. Moreover, she sang with folk and jazz singer Barbara Dan for Capital Records in 1961, an experience she is particularly proud of.
Along with her sisters, Ms. Andrews sang in "We've Come this Far by Faith; The West Coast Gospel Tradition," which was brought together by Bernice Johnson Reagon, the Smithsonian Institution curator of African-American Culture and founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock. When she and her sisters appeared in the original Jon Hendricks Evolution of the Blues at the Monterey Jazz Festival, they received national attention.
Ms. Andrews began her career as a student at the San Francisco Career Academy of Broadcasting, where she completed high school and junior college coursework. She then joined the Coronet Modeling School, completing additional coursework. She initially began her studies with the intention of becoming a teacher, but her love for music transcended that interest.
Throughout her career, Ms. Andrews has been recognized for her contributions. A station KDIA and KQED-TV grantee, she received an Outstanding Supervisor Award from the San Francisco Department of the Treasury in 1985. She has also been honored with Awards of Merit on the Ben Alexander Television Show, a Certificate of Appreciation from Edwin Hawkins Workshop, and an Incentive Award from the Facilities Management Branch.
Among the notable highlights of her career, she cites being the first gospel group to sell out The Paramount in Oakland, CA, to be a crowning achievement. They received Letters of Commendation from the manager of the theater. She also earned awards including Best Pianist, Best Choir Director, and Best Directress Trophy for Proficiency in Interpretation of Religious Music. She earned a Certificate of Achievement as a singer and in-prison seminar instructor with Chuck Colson. She has conducted music seminars in Berlin, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria, and Hawai'i.
Impressively, Ms. Andrews appeared on the cover of Fotnoten, the magazine for music and dance issues by the Union of Sweden Teachers. She was also interviewed by Marie Starch for Dagen, the most important Christian publication with 20,000 subscribers. She has also been featured in numerous honors publications, including the 15th and 16th editions of Who's Who of American Women. She attributes her success to God, her parental influence, life experience, and determination.
