Dr. Shaver is a retired optoelectronics manufacturing company executive who spent the last three years of his working career as general manager of the Vactec Optoelectronics Division of PerkinElmer, Inc. between 1999 and 2002. A materials scientist and engineer for more than 40 years, he previously held the roles of president and director of technology at the Vactec Division of EG&G, Inc. in St. Louis from 1988 to 1999, founder and president of Inmar, Inc., and director of marketing for the optoelectronics division of National Semiconductor Corp. Dr. Shaver was founder, V.P. of manufacturing and President of Xciton Corporation following a position as a Staff Scientist at the General Electric Research Laboratory, Niskayuna, NY. During graduate school he was a consulting engineer to Foster-Miller Inc. and an instructor in the electrical engineering department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge for two years beginning in 1963.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shaver has authored technical publications on solid state and physical electronics. He was also a consultant in his field for the Essex Chemical Corp. in Clifton, New Jersey and TRW Inc. in Dallas. Locally, he served on the board and as treasurer for the radio station KDHX, a community-based station in St. Louis. Dr. Shaver is also a former treasurer of the Dougherty Lake Subdivision, past president of the Rotary Club of Des Peres, MO, board member of the Rotary Club of West St. Louis County, and a major donor to Rotary International. He was elected to membership in Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi and Eta Kappa Nu. A dedicated world-wide traveler, he now presents lectures on the wildlife, people, and environment of the world's Polar Regions.
Awarded a number of accolades and honors over the course of his career, Dr. Shaver holds several patents in his field. Furthermore, he has been a three-time recipient of the IR-100 Award from the Industrial Research Magazine in 1966, 1973 and 1974. In light of all his accomplishments, Dr. Shaver has previously been selected for inclusion in the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the East.
Born in Gary, Indiana, and growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dr. Shaver became interested in radio during the 1950's. Curious about how radios function, he became an amateur Radio operator in 1953 and remained active until graduate school in 1960. He received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1960 and accepted a fellowship with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the following year where he began study in physical electronics and solid state physics. He completed both a Master of Science and Doctor of Science at MIT in 1962 and 1965, respectively. While pursuing his graduate degrees, Dr. Shaver also spent two years as a research assistant.
