Valerie Carter Brumfield Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished listee, Ms. Brumfield celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Ms. Brumfield retired from her full-time career in 2018 after spending 40 years in nursing. She currently works as a clinical nurse consultant, consulting on evidence-based nursing practice, nursing quality improvement and standard of care for emergency nursing and stroke patients. She also provides consultation services for hospitals seeking Joint Commission Stroke Center certification.

During her tenure, Ms. Brumfield worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) between 2000 and 2018 and the South Fulton Medical Center in East Point, GA, from 1994 to 2000. She also spent years as a manager at the West Paces Medical Center in Atlanta, GA, nurse educator and patient education coordinator at the Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, LA, and in various intensive care roles. She began her career in 1978 as a staff nurse working in the recovery rooms at St. Luke's Episcopalian Hospital in Houston, TX.

Leading an amazing career, Ms. Brumfield has lectured symposiums on various topics from triage in the emergency room to evidenced based practice, and has coordinated various injury prevention activities within the community. She notably co-led the inaugural Stroke Center initiative with a neurologist at UTMB that successfully met the criteria for the Primary Stroke Center Joint Commission Accreditation. She also co-led the policy development, training and implementation of ultrasound guided IV insertion by nurses for patients with difficult intravenous access in the Emergency Department, critical care unit, heart and neuroradiology endovascular departments, and prison hospitals, among other locations. Ms. Brumfield facilitated the implementation of the first computerized charting in the UTMB Emergency Department and designed and implemented a nursing home documentation form to improve communication between the emergency room and nursing homes affiliated with UTMB. Involved with numerous courses as well, she developed, coordinated and instructed a quarterly three-and-a-half-hour Stroke Beyond the Basics course for six years, was a course coordinator and instructor for the Emergency Nurses Association trauma nurse core curriculum for 17 years and developed, coordinated and instructed the biannual Emergency Department preceptor course for five years. Additionally, she developed, coordinated and instructed an annual Emergency Department basic triage course for 10 years and coordinated approximately two to three community stroke screenings per year for 15 years.

Currently, Ms. Brumfield is president of the Gulf Coast chapter of the Emergency Nurses Association, past chair of the Texas State Emergency Nurses Association Professional Practice Committee, Government Affairs Committee, Awards and Honors Committee, and Injury Prevention Committee. She is also a national and local chapter member. Ms. Brumfield has co-chaired the Hospital Nursing Research Council and served as a facilitator for the Emergency Department Shared Governance Council, which promoted staff nurses at the bedside making decisions about their practice. She is a longtime member of several other professional organizations, including the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, the Southern Nursing Research Society and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists. Furthermore, Ms. Brumfield has been active with the American Heart Association (AHA), having served as president of the Galveston Island AHA board and a member of the Galveston Island Gala Committee. She has been on the AHA Speakers Bureau since 2000.

Ms. Brumfield has written extensively in her field as well. She has contributed articles to such publications as the Journal of Nursing Administration and the Journal of Emergency Nursing. Covering various topics like creative approaches to increasing hospital-based nursing research, she has also written about enhancing Registered Nurse professional engagement and contribution and preoperative patient teaching in ambulatory surgery settings.

Honored with two Good Samaritan Foundation Excellence in Nursing Awards in 2011 and 2013, Ms. Brumfield also received a UTMB Nursing Service Silent Angel Award in 2011, and an Excellence in Nursing Practice Award in 2005 and an Excellence in Research Award in 1994 from Sigma Theta Tau International. She has been cited in the fifth edition of Who's Who in American Nursing and the 21st edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.

Ms. Brumfield received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Louisiana State University in 1977 and a Master of Science in Nursing from Georgia State University in 1994. She is a certified emergency nurse (CEN) and certified critical care registered nurse (CCRN). She holds multiple other credentials as well, including in advanced cardiac life support, basic cardiac life support and pediatric advanced cardiac life support.
