With over 30 years of practiced experience, Dr. Cheung has excelled as a James L. Knight Professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Miami since 2001. A native of Hong Kong, China, he initially earned a diploma from King's College in Hong Kong and subsequently graduated from the Tai Po Government Primary School in Hong Kong. After relocating to the United States, he enrolled at the Loyola University in Los Angeles, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1968. Soon thereafter, Dr. Cheung concluded his studies with a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular biology at the University of Southern California in 1974.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Cheung served as a professor of medicine and a research scientist with the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami in 1996 as well as a professor for the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1986 to 1996. Prior to these appointments, he found success as a fellow of the National Institutes of Health and as a senior research scientist with the Miami Veteran Medical Center. Dr. Cheung also contributed to his field as a distinguished visiting professor for the University of Hong Kong from 2008 to 2010, a scientific liaison with the National Institutes of Health Peer Review in 2007, and a Hyde lecturer for the department of biomedical engineering at the University of Tennessee in 2004.
An expert in the field, Dr. Cheung is the proud recipient of four patents in the field and has contributed his research to 15 book chapters and 173 peer-review publications. Additionally, he flourished as an editor-in-chief and a guest editor for 11 professional journals. To remain aware of changes in the field, he maintains his affiliation with the American College of Rheumatology, the Orthopedic Research Society, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Society for Cell Biology, and the National Institutes of Health Roundtable Panel of Experts. As a testament to his success, Dr. Cheung has been presented with the William R. Jones Outstanding Mentor Award from the Florida Education Fund, the Inaugural Faculty Mentor of the Year Award from the University of Miami, and the Dean's Senior Laboratory of the Year Award from the University of Miami School of Medicine, among others.
