Bernard J. Paris, Ph.D. holds Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from The Johns Hopkins University. He has taught English at the undergraduate and graduate levels for forty years, first at Lehigh University, then at Michigan State University, and finally at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He has been Visiting Professor in the Victorian Studies Centre of the University of Leicester. He was founding Director of the International Karen Horney Society and, at the University of Florida, was Director of the Institute for Psychological Study of the Arts for many years. He is an Honorary Member of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis and is on the Advisory Board of The American Journal of Psychoanalysis. He is affiliated with the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis, The American Academy of Psychoanalysis, and the Modern Language Association of America.
Professor Paris has specialized in the psychological study of literature and has developed a psychological approach employing the theories of Karen Horney. His biography of Horney was selected as a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times. He has authored, edited, or co-edited a total of sixteen books, many of which are psychological studies of literature. These include A Psychological Approach to Fiction: Studies in Thackeray, Stendhal, George Eliot, Dostoevsky, and Conrad; Imagined Human Beings: A Psychological Approach to Character and Conflict in Literature; two books on Shakespeare; and books on Jane Austen, Conrad, George Eliot, Dostoevsky, Milton, and Hardy. He has contributed chapters to numerous books and has published over 40 essays in journals.
Dr. Paris has been honored with Fellowships by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. As Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Florida, he is currently enjoying retirement in Gainesville.
