A former teacher who dedicated five years of her career to the classroom, Ms. Irvin decided to pursue a different path in 1971 when she purchased the Indian Hill Golf Course in Mount Vernon, Ill. in 1971. Selling the property the following year, she acquired the Tanglewood Apartments in Mount Vernon during this time. Several years later, Ms. Irvin became the owner of the Don Nelson Company in McNabb, Ill.
Inspired to become a teacher by several family members who had become educators, Ms. Irvin felt restricted by the lack of vocational choices for women at the time. A member of a Quaker family that strongly supported higher education, including her grandfather who was notably the four-year graduate at the University of Illinois, she pursued an education at Illinois State University before accepting a position as a fourth-grade teacher for the Clay School and Marsh in Woodstock, Ill. Ms. Irvin later taught at Marsh-Loves Park in Rockford, Ill., Middlesex School in London England, and 2 years at Fairview School in Carpentersville, Ill. prior to her career in business.
When Ms. Irvin became a business owner, she found her greatest strengths while running her apartment building. At one point, she had been supervising more than 100 apartments and four office buildings all by herself. Though these responsibilities were a lot of work, Ms. Irvin proved to herself that anything was possible.
Very active as a citizen of Mount Vernon, Ms. Irvin served as the treasurer of Comprehensive Services, the chairman of the board of Business and Professional Women and a member of the board of directors of the Elderly Housing Corporation. She continues to remain involved as trustee of Shiloh Township since 1998. A member of the Mount Vernon Rotary Club, her local YMCA and the Mitchell Museum, she has been selected for inclusion in the 17th edition of Who's Who in the World. A Grace Davis scholar through the Illinois State Teachers in 1960, Ms. Irvin previously obtained a Bachelor's degree shortly thereafter at Illinois State University in 1964.
