Ms. Melcher has been a physical therapist and longtime owner and operator of Physical Therapy Services in Honolulu, HI, since 1972. Celebrating 60 years in the field this year, during the first decade of her career she traveled the world providing therapy for patients at several different hospitals. Beginning in 1959, she first worked at the Copenhagen Community Hospital in Denmark. She then traveled to the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC, the Riksforsikringsverket Hospital in Sweden, and the Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In 1964, Ms. Melcher accepted a position as chief of physical therapy at L.B. Johnson Hospital in Pago Pago, Samoa, where she remained until 1970. Making one last move, she joined the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific in Honolulu as a physical therapist for two years before establishing her own practice in Hawaii.
Ms. Melcher is a longstanding member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Danske Fysioterapeuter, a professional organization in Denmark. She is also actively involved with several avocational organizations, including the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Planned Parenthood, Outdoor Circle, the Rebild National Park Society and the Waikiki Yacht Club.
Included in approximately 10 editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women, Ms. Melcher notably graduated in 1959 from the Theilman School of Physical Therapy in Copenhagen, Denmark, just prior to making her way to the United States.
Born in Aarhus, Denmark, in 1934, M. Jegsen relocated to the United States in 1959 and now resides in Honolulu, not far from her business. Married to the late Richard Allen Melcher for more than 50 years, she has two sons and five grandchildren. In her free time, she loves playing paddle tennis and bridge. She also loves the outdoors and especially loves sailing.
