With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Helms has been recognized as professor emeritus of the University of Rhode Island since 1999, having been an associate professor since 1989 and an assistant professor since 1971. Prior to obtaining these roles, she was a cooperative extension agent with Dade County, Florida, from 1963 to 1968, and an educator with the Palmetto Middle School in Miami from 1962 to 1963. Earlier in her career, Dr. Helms was an educator with the Limestone Community High School in Bartonville, Illinois, from 1958 to 1962.
Dr. Helms began her career as a student at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in vocational home economics in 1958. Going on to join Florida State University in Tallahassee, she completed a Master of Science in textile and clothing in 1970 and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in textiles from the university in 1971.
A respected voice in her areas of expertise, Dr. Helms has been an active leader in her community as well. She is a member of the American Society for Quality Control, ASTM International and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. She has also been affiliated with the International Textile Apparel Association and the American Apparel Manufacturers Association.
Throughout her career, Dr. Helms has been recognized for her contributions. Notably, she is a grantee of the University of Rhode Island Foundation and Burlington Industries. In light of all her accomplishments, Dr. Helms has previously been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who of American Women.
