For as long as she can remember, Ms. Thom has wanted to teach. Raised in Georgetown, Guyana, she has excelled as an educator for over 40 years, the first in her family history to do so. With a particular interest in taking students with inadequacies in certain subjects under her wing, it was always her abiding joy to help them grow and master the skills they needed to succeed. She began her career as a dress designer at the Carnegie School of Home Economics in Georgetown in 1959. Transitioning to the Saint Philip's Government School, Ms. Thom taught home economics and elementary education until 1975.
The following year, Ms. Thom immigrated to the United States, securing a position as a day care education assistant with a community sponsors program in Brooklyn, NY in 1978. She subsequently taught at the Saint Mark's Day School. During this time, she obtained a Master of Science in reading and disabilities from Adelphi University in 1982. With her new degree in hand, she accepted the position of a resource room instructor for Junior High School #44 in New York. Ms. Thom maintains membership with the United Federation of Teachers, and the Guyana Teachers Association.
Adjacent to her career in education, Ms. Thom keeps her Anglican faith close to her heart, suffusing herself in studying the literature and knowledge of theology. She has earned an O Level General Certificate of Education in Religious Study and Literature from the University of London, and was the secretary of the Friends of St. George's Cathedral in her native Georgetown. When she is not guiding children along the first steps of their education, Ms. Thom enjoys partaking in yoga, dance, traveling, and the theater.
