Dr. Di is a tenured full professor and graduate chair in the Department of Educational Foundation, College of Education at the University of Hawai'i-Mānoa, a position she has held since 2005. She previously served as the assistant dean for COE from 2005 to 2009. Other roles she has held include professor of educational foundation at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, FL. Hired in 1993 as an assistant professor, she later earned the role of associate professor in 1996 and full professor in 2000. Prior to her 26-year tenure, she was an assistant professor of secondary education at the University of North Dakota from 1991 to 1993, a fellow at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, MA, from 1988 to 1991, and a research assistant in the Department of Education at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, from 1986 to 1987.
A visiting scholar and research associate at Harvard University from 1999 to 2000, Dr. Di was also an exchange professor in the department of education at National Kaohsiung Normal University in Taiwan in 1998. She has also been an exchange professor at Peking University, China, 2019, 2018, 2015, 2011, 2009, and 1997; and a visiting professor at Renmin University, China in 2016 and 2014.
Outside of the classroom, Dr. Di has been a speaker in the field, an institutional consultant to the World Bank, Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Baku, and a teacher education consultant to the Ministry of Education in Maseru, Lesotho, Africa.
Early on, Dr. Di taught English as a second language. She also has been deeply touched and inspired by the optimism, courage, and beauty of students in Africa through her international work. Although they faced many challenges, they were determined to learn. Throughout her career, Dr. Di found it imperative that she continue her own education and soul searching and cultivation so that she could be the best teacher she could be. The opportunity to teach for all these years is something she calls a self-learning experience, in that it has helped her grow as not only a scholar and researcher, but also as a human being.
Dr. Di is the author of Dunhuang Grottoes and Global Education: Philosophical, Spiritual, Scientific, and Aesthetic Insights (Palgrave/Macmillan. April 2019), Chinese Philosophy on Teaching & Learning: Xue Ji in the 21st Century. Edited with H. McEwan, Asian Study Series. Edited by R. Ames & P. Hershock (SUNY Press 2016) and A Comparison of the Educational Ideas and Practices of John Dewey and Mao Zedong in China. NY: The Edwin Mellen Press, 1992. She has also contributed chapters to several books by other authors in her area of expertise and published additional papers in refereed journals.
Dr. Di is a Fulbright Educational Specialist (2016-present) through the National Accreditation in Teacher Education, CAEP (formerly NCATE) site visitor. She was also a Harvard Educational Review Manuscript Editor (1989-1990) and Editorial Board Member (1988-1990). She currently serves ae editor for the Journal of Educational Perspectives. She is a longtime member of the National Women's Association, the Philosophy of Education Society and the American Educational Research Association.
Dr. Di has been included in the 62nd edition of Who's Who in America, the 25th edition of Who's Who of American Women, and the 4th (1996), 6th (1998), 8th (2000), 10th (2002) and 12th editions (2008) of Who's Who among American Teachers, in addition to other teaching awards.
Earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and education from Beijing Normal University in 1982, she then relocated to the United States and worked toward a Master of Education in educational foundation and English from Wake Forest University, which she earned in 1987, and a Doctor of Education in curriculum and instruction from Harvard University in 1991.
