With over 30 years of experience as an attorney, Rita Williams currently serves as Chief Executive Officer and owner of Williams & Associates in Decatur, Georgia, having owned and operated the firm since 1990. Prior to this, Ms. Williams had worked as an associate at several other firms in the area, and spent the beginning of her career as an elementary school teacher. She maintains a focus on personal injury cases, as well as cases involving social security, criminal law and much more.
Ms. Williams began her education at Spelman College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1972. She then completed a Master of Arts at the University of Michigan, receiving the degree in 1976. She then spent the next several years as an elementary school teacher, teaching in California from 1977 to 1982. She returned to school to pursue a law degree, and in 1987 she completed a Juris Doctor from Emory University. She was shortly thereafter admitted to practice in the state of Georgia.
After completing her law degree, she became an associate at Alston & Bird in Atlanta, working with the firm from 1987 to 1989. She then spent a year with Bernard & Associates, and in 1990 she opened her private practice, Williams & Associates, which she is still operating today. In the past, Ms. Williams has also worked as a tutor for law students, an instructor for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, and a Moot Court Supreme Court Justice. During her career, she was the appellant's counsel in a landmark case in Georgia, wherein the case clarified the law regarding the addition of parties to lawsuits.
Outside of her work in the law, she spends time as a writer, and a spoken word artist. She is also actively involved in religious life, having been affiliated with Ebenezer Baptist Church, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Mount Olive Church of God, and Bethlehem Church of God.
She is a decorated attorney, having been listed by Rue Ratings Best Lawyers of America, as well as Lawyers of Distinction.
