With more than 55 years of professional experience, Dr. McCombs has been a professor on the associated faculty of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile since 2000 and an adjunct professor of the University of Navarra in Spain since 1994. He has also been recognized as the Jesse H. Jones Chair in Communications Emeritus of the University of Texas at Austin since 2011, having been the Jesse H. Jones Chair in Communications and professor of government from 1985 to 2011 and chairman of the Department of Journalism from 1985 to 1991. In addition to his primary roles, he was a Paul F. Lazarsfeld Professor at the University of Vienna in Austria in 2011 and a visiting professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile from 1998 to 1999.
From 1975 to 1984, Dr. McCombs was director of the American Newspaper Publishers Association News Research Center, and from 1973 to 1985, he was a John Ben Snow Professor of Research and director of the Communication Research Center at Syracuse University. He was previously an associate professor with the University of North Carolina from 1969 to 1973, having been an assistant professor since 1967. Likewise, he was an assistant professor with the University of California Los Angeles from 1966 to 1967, having been a lecturer since 1965. Earlier in his career, he was a reporter with the New Orleans Times-Picayune from 1961 to 1963.
Dr. McCombs began his career as a student at Tulane University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1960. He then joined Stanford University, completing a Master of Arts in 1961. He continued his studies with the university, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1966. A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. McCombs has been an active leader in his community. He is a former head of the Communication Theory and Methodology Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, as well as a past president of the World Association for Public Opinion Research and member of the American Association for Public Opinion Research.
Throughout his career, Dr. McCombs has been recognized for his contributions. The recipient of an honorary doctorate and University Gold Medal from the Pontifical University of Chile in 2015, he also received a Medal of Honor from Universidad del Norte in Colombia in 2015, a Silver Medal from the University of Navarra in 2014, and the Helen Dinerman Award from the World Association for Public Opinion Research in Amsterdam in 2011. Earlier in his career, he received a Presidential Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in 2007, an honorary doctorate from the University of Antwerp in Belgium in 2002, and a College of Communication Annual Research Award from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001, among myriad others.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. McCombs currently resides in Austin. He has four children: Mary Elizabeth, Leslie Ann, Maxwell Inskip and Samuel Edward. He is also the doting grandfather of two grandchildren, Alden and Devan.
