Dr. Kachel commenced his career in the United States Army Air Forces, where he served in World War II with the Air Transport Command and the Headquarters Squadron at Tokyo International Airport in Japan. On active duty from 1946 to 1948, he subsequently attended college through the GI Bill at Oklahoma Panhandle State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in industrial arts in 1952. Continuing his education, he earned a Master of Science in secondary administration and curriculum from Oklahoma State University in 1955 and a Doctor of Education in industrial arts and curriculum from the University of Northern Colorado in 1967. Dr. Kachel also completed postgraduate and postdoctoral coursework at Oregon State University and the University of New Mexico in 1956 and 1995, respectively.
Embarking on his professional career after receiving his bachelor's degree, Dr. Kachel was a teacher and principal in the Yarbrough School District in Eva, Oklahoma, between 1952 and 1957, before progressing from instructor to professor at Oklahoma Panhandle State University over the course of the following 32 years. During this time, he was also active as the chair of the divisions of applied arts and business, the department head of applied arts, the department head of industrial education and technology, and the registrar. From 1989 to 1990, he notably served as vice president of academy administration at the university. Retiring from his career in 1992, his final role was registrar for the No Man's Land History Museum in Goodwell, Oklahoma, a position he had held since 1968.
During his tenure in education and museums, Dr. Kachel sat on the accrediting committee of the Oklahoma State Department of Education. In addition, he is a prolific author, having co-authored two books, "Images of America: Beaver County" and "Images of America: Texas County" in 2011 and 2013, respectively. To remain current with developments in the field, he maintained affiliation with multiple organizations, including the American Industrial Arts Association, the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, the American Association of University Professors, the National Education Association, the Oklahoma Education Association and the Oklahoma Anthropological Society, among others.
As a testament to his longevity in the industry, Dr. Kachel garnered numerous accolades and honors. The recipient of an Appreciation Award from the Rotary Club of Guymon in Oklahoma, he also earned the Palette Award from Artists' Studio Northwest and was recognized for distinguished service by the Area Artists' Studio in Amarillo, Texas. However, when asked of his career highlights, Dr. Kachel cites being cleared by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for top secret material while in the Air Force as a crowning achievement.
