With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Edwards has been with VHE Technical Analysis since 2013. Prior to obtaining his current role, he was director of process safety with IHI Engineering and Construction International from 2012 to 2013, with Kvaerner from 2011 to 2012, and with Aker Solutions from 2007 to 2011, having been process director with Aker Kvaerner from 1995 to 2007. He previously held a number of positions with Allstates/BE&K, Inc., including principal engineer from 1994 to 1995, process engineering manager from 1993 to 1995, lead process engineer from 1990 to 1993, and process engineer from 1983 to 1990.
From 1982 to 1985, Dr. Edwards was southwest editor of Plant Services Magazine, and from 1980 to 1982, he was senior process engineer with Fluor Engineers and Constructors. He served as a visiting professor of Environmental Engineering with Rice University from 1979 to 1980, supervisor of research engineering with United Energy Resources from 1976 to 1979, and research fellow with Merck, Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories from 1973 to 1976. Earlier in his career, he was manager of advanced technology with the National Science Foundation from 1971 to 1972 and assistant professor of Chemical Engineering at Cornell University from 1967 to 1973.
Dr. Edwards began his career as a student at Rice University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He continued his studies with the University of California Berkeley, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering in 1967. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas. A councilor of the Engineering, Science, and Technology Council of Houston since 2017, Dr. Edwards, a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), is past chair of the following AIChE activities:
• Ninth Global Congress on Process Safety in 2013
• Second International Plant Operation and Design Conference in 1997
• South Texas Section in 1995
• First Process Plant Safety Symposium in 1992
He also created (with Robert Finn) the AIChE Today Series Continuing Education Course entitled New Separation Techniques, which was held from1968 through 1980.
A member emeritus of the American Chemical Society, he held roles of Chair of the ACS Ithaca Section and Councilor of the ACS Division of Biochemical Technology.
Dr. Edwards served on the Centennial Council for the chemical engineering department at Rice University.He served as the first chair of the Industrial Advisory Council for the department of chemical engineering at Prairie View A & M University and he served on the Technical Advisory Committee for the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center at Texas A&M University
Dr. Edwards is also a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Fire Protection Association.
Dr. Edwards has authored more than 70 publications, including a new book with Suzanne Shelley for students, teachers, and guidance counselors entitled "Careers in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering".
Throughout his career, Dr. Edwards has been recognized for his contributions. Most recently participating in the Best of the Best Keynote Speech with Karen Study at the Process Plant Safety Symposium in Orlando, Florida, in 2018, he was the recipient of the Norton Walton/Russell Miller Award from the Safety and Health Division of the AIChE in 2015 and the Design Safety Award from Aker Kvaerner in 2008. Earlier in his career, he received a Service Award from the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center at Texas A & M University in 2002, Employee of the Year from Aker Kvaerner in 1998, Shield of Irenee Award from E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. in 1994, 1998 and 2001, and the Safety, Health and Environmental Excellence Award in 1996. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
