GREAT BARRINGTON, MA, June 11, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Mary Finley Berryhill with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Berryhill celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Retiring from nursing and education in 2012 after contributing more than 45 years to the field, Ms. Berryhill spent the first portion of her career in Florida before relocating to Massachusetts. Just after graduating from college she was hired as a staff nurse and nurse clinician at Shands Teaching Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1967. She soon after became a research associate on the campus in the College Of Nursing before becoming a childbirth educator in Ocala, Florida in 1970. She then served as an outpatient obstetrics nurse for Keith H. Knorr, MD, in Ocala and as state coordinator for the American Society for Psychoprophylaxis in Obstetrics (ASPO).
In 1977 Ms. Berryhill was the first person ever to be named OGN (Obstetrical, Gynecological, and Neonatal) Nurse of the Year by the Florida Chapter of the Nurses Association of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (NAACOG) for her work with ASPO. Later that year, a close friend of Ms. Berryhill's got word about the NAACOG award to journalists who were just finishing an article for Redbook Magazine called, "Making It Happen In Florida". Consequently Ms. Berryhill was included in the article. Soon one of the two women journalists was invited to appear on the Today Show to discuss her work, and she used the Florida NAACOG award to Ms Berryhill as an example of what women were accomplishing in Florida at that time.
Following this she transitioned into a new role of Student Health Service nurse at the Berkshire School in Sheffield, Massachusetts, in 1978, remaining in that role for 12 years, and per diem for another 14 years. In November of 1979, after being run into by a drunk driver at 50 m.p.h. when he crossed the center line, and struck her car head on, she received life saving care from the EMTs of the Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad. When she had recovered, she took the basic EMT course and joined the squad in 1981. After passing more classes in 1983, she became an Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate. She served as the vice president of the squad, and also presented classes covering emergency childbirth, pediatric emergency care, and child abuse recognition and care to fellow EMTs during her active time from 1981-1993 with "per diem" lectures until 2004.
From 1984 to 2006 she also worked at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington as an emergency room nurse, shift director and educator. As a longstanding member of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), Ms. Berryhill served in numerous capacities for the organization. She became a member of the Berkshire County chapter of the ENA in 1992 and served as treasurer in 1993 and president of the chapter during 1998 and 1999. She was a Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum instructor from 1992 to 2008, and was an Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course instructor from 1993 to 2012. She was on the Massachusetts Emergency Nurses Association State Pediatric Committee from 1994 to 2010. Ms. Berryhill has since been cited in approximately a dozen editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of American Women.
Born in Miami Beach, Florida, Ms. Berryhill grew up surrounded by loving parents and grandparents. In fact, her paternal grandfather was a surgeon and paternal grandmother was a nurse, as is her daughter. Going on to college, Ms. Berryhill studied nursing science, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Florida in 1967. Ms. Berryhill since became a Registered Nurse and a Certified Emergency Nurse, Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course instructor and Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum instructor. Married to her husband, Robert L. Snyder, since 1996, Ms. Berryhill has two children and two grandchildren, and two step-children and two step-grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys the outdoors, especially cross country skiing, backpacking and camping, hiking, white-water canoeing and birding. She has been an Appalachian Trail volunteer since 1994. She is also an avid swimmer and enjoyed flying lessons, which she took in her 70's.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Mary Finley Berryhill has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
