He began his professional career as an associate of Knepper, White, Arter & Hadden in Columbus, OH in 1975, remaining in this position for five years before becoming Chief of Staff for U.S. Representative Robert Shamansky in Washington between 1981 and 1982. He later served as a partner of Carlile, Patchen & Murphy from 1982 to 1996 and Lane Alton & Horst from 1996 to 2006. Mr. Carpenter subsequently found success as a managing partner at Carpenter Lane LLC from 2006 to 2010.
Prior to embarking on his professional path, Mr. Carpenter pursued a formal education at Ohio University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in 1972. He concluded his studies at the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, where he obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1974. After receiving these academic honors, Mr. Carpenter was admitted to practice law in a number of state and federal courts, including the Ohio State Bar Association, the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Northern Districts of Ohio, the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Court of Claims, the Supreme Court for the United States, and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Third and Sixth Circuits.
Active in his local community, Mr. Carpenter has worked as a trustee of the Columbus Area Leadership Program from 1985 to 1991, for which he also held the post of the president, and the League Against Child Abuse in Columbus, OH, from 1989 to 1990. Since 2017, he has maintained his involvement as an elder at the New Albany Presbyterian Church. Outside of his primary responsibilities, Mr. Carpenter remain updated of trends in his field through affiliations with numerous related organizations. A fellow of the Columbus Bar Association, he has been affiliated with the American Bar Association, the Million Dollar Advocacy Forum, and Phi Beta Kappa. Likewise, Mr. Carpenter is a fellow and a board member of the litigation section of the Ohio State Bar Association since 2015.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Carpenter was recognized annually among the Super Lawyers between 2006 and 2010. A charter fellow of the Construction Lawyers Society of America, he has been honored among the Best Lawyers in America since 2011 and the Best Lawyers as Lawyer of the Year in civil litigation in 2017 and both professional malpractice defendants and product liability litigation in 2019.
