Dr. Kaplan is a Board-Certified Diplomate in diagnostic radiology, specializing in neuroradiology and imaging in Cleveland. She completed three fellowships: one in body imaging with Stanley Siegelman, another in neuroradiology with Arthur Rosembaum both at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and a third in whole body magnetic resonance at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with Alex Aisen. Dr. Kaplan was an assistant professor at New York Presbyterian-Columbia University Medical Center where she worked with Drs. Kent Ellis and William Seaman. She is a longtime member of the American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America. She studied medicine in Mexico at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara where during her last three years of medical school she was elected class president. After becoming a medical doctor, she completed her internship at the School of Medicine at Rutgers, New Jersey. Her medical training included a Surgery residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and a residence in radiology at Columbia University in New York City.
Dr. Kaplan's original radiological contributions have been published in the Journal Radiology: "Dust Reductions in Darkrooms to Avoid False Positives" and in the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. She co-authored "Preliminary Clinical Trial of Gadodiamide Injection: A New Nonionic Gadolinium Contrast Agent for MRI Imaging."
Aside from her work in radiology, Dr. Kaplan is the founder and President of Lifewatch Group, an international think-tank that consults with international experts in all fields in order to share practical solutions to solve key world problems. The latest scientific understanding of how diet impacts health, economy and the environment, has inspired Dr. Kaplan to write a book called "The BEST Diet." Through this book in progress, she brings awareness of the fact that according to the National Academy of Sciences, up to 70% of C02 is caused by animal husbandry and animal products, which includes seafood, fish, milk - dairy and eggs. It points out that the top causes of death in developed nations are these diseases: cardiovascular, cancer, diabetes, immune and Alzheimer's which are stimulated or caused to a large extent by animal products and processed foods. This has been observed to be true also in primates by Dr. Lucas at the Cleveland Zoo where its gorillas who suffered of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular were cured by changing their diet to whole plant, i.e., no animal products and non-processed foods. Dr Kaplan emphasizes that it us up to us, not governmental regulations to stop climate change. She points out that by changing our diet we can quickly stop global warming, end world hunger, restore the environment and considerably improve the world's economy. Gabriela is a poet and has authored two poetry anthologies "Aquarelles" and "Reflections," Furthermore, she released original poetry audio recordings for which Krishna Srinivas named her ambassador for the World Poetry Society Intercontinental WPSI in 2005.
The recipient of a Partners in Conservation Award from the World Wildlife Fund in 1999, Dr. Kaplan has received several other accolades over the course of her career. Presented with the Republican Presidential Legion of Merit Award, she was also recognized with an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. In light of all her accomplishments, Dr. Kaplan has been cited in nearly 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in the World. Dr Kaplan is member of the Cleveland Astronomical Society and the Sierra Club, and served as Fleet Surgeon for the Put-In-Bay Yacht Club from 1999 to 2009.
Born in Quito, Ecuador, Dr. Kaplan knew by the age of 13 that she wanted to follow in her father's footsteps and become a radiologist. She studied piano at the National Conservatory of Music in Quito under the tutelage of Francoise Lambert Countess of Laporte, first prize winner in piano at the National Conservatory of Paris, France, who was invited to Ecuador to teach at the Conservatory. Dr. Kaplan left at age 15 for the USA where at the Cleveland Institute of Music she continued her piano studies with Ruth Edwards until she left for college. Gabriela earned a Bachelor of Art's degree at Whittier College in California.
She is a descendant of Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Benalcázar (15 generations ago) who with Balboa in Panama, discovered the Pacific Ocean. Benalcázar was involved in the conquest of Honduras. The conquest with Pizzarro of : Peru Ecuador and Colombia, where he was the founder of these cities: Guayaquil, Quito, Cali, Popayan and Pasto, where King Charles V of Spain appointed him Governor of Colombia.
Gabriela is also a descendant of Juan Pío Montúfar, the Count of Selva Alegre, who sparked the independence of Quito, and by so doing, inspired South America's independence from Spain.
Among notables in her Ecuadorian family, aside from many ministers, ambassadors and generals, include Gral. Francisco. J. Salazar, and president Rodrigo Borja. She is proud to be linked to the national Hero, Hugo Ortiz, who defended Ecuador from the Peruvian Invasion in 1941. Gabriela's mother, sister of Hugo, was the founder and director of Montessori's school in Ecuador. Her mother Rosa Ortiz Kaplan gave pedagogic advice at the Radio Station HCJB La Voz de los Andes in Quito to parents of young children during many years. This aired in over 100 nations in various languages. Rosa was also a talented violinist who played with the Ecuadorian National Orchestra in Quito.
From her paternal side, her father Dr. Isidor Kaplan, MD born in Latvia, was an extraordinary polymath, a pioneer in radiology that trained in medicine and radiology in 1927 at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1936, The President of Ecuador, Dr. Isidro Ayora, MD, invited Dr. Kaplan to Ecuador to work as radiologist in the Clinica Ayora, thus he became its first radiologist in Ecuador. Aside from radiology, he excelled in violin, paleontology, botany, zoology, textiles, and graphic arts, in particular, photography. Some of Isidor Kaplan's textile work depicting prehistoric cavern paintings were purchased by Gilbert Grosvenor, owner of the National Geographic Society and by Johns Hopkins University's President Milton Eisenhower. Isidor Kaplan in Ecuador worked with Robert Hoffsteter, French paleontologist and taxonomist on fossils of the Pleistocene era, notably Megatherium Americanum.

Gabriela's half-brother, Prof. Jean Claude Kaplan, MD was born in France. He is an important pioneer in molecular biology. He was part of the team of the scientists who worked on the original human genome project which determined the molecular and functional makeup of homo sapiens' DNA.
He was the chairman of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Paris, and now he is part of the INSRM in Paris. He is the author of the first book in the world that incorporates medicine with molecular biology (in French)" Biologie Moleculaire et Medicine" and is the creator of the chart of the Gene Table of Neuromuscular Disorders which is used worldwide.
