Retired as a professor emeritus since 2014, Ms. Zimmermann excelled through a successful tenure with Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, California, for four decades. She began her career with the institution as a faculty member in 1974, further progressing to the post of the chairperson of the faculty senate in 1980. As she continued to advance with the aforementioned college, she served as a chairperson for the division of life sciences from 1981 to 1990 as well as chairperson for the division of physical education between 1985 and 1990. She was the dean of physical, life, and health sciences from 1996 to 2004. Furthermore, Ms. Zimmermann was honored and chosen by the Faculty Senate as the 1992-93 Faculty Speaker. From 1993 to 1996, Ms. Zimmermann developed and coordinated the environmental hazardous materials technology program.
During her time as the division chairperson of the life sciences and physical education, Ms. Zimmermann maintained the curriculum in two major academic areas. Other achievements to her credit include aiding faculty members in establishing a geography program, maintaining the support curriculum for Allied Health programs, and spearheading the new curriculum in sociobiology, nutrition, and horticulture. As the dean of the college, she and the nursing faculty developed a Nursing Assistant Program that created a ladder for students to progress through all three necessary nursing programs to achieve the registered nurse level. For her accomplishments with Chaffey College, Ms. Zimmermann was celebrated as the Alumni of Year in addition to being presented with the Meritorious Service Award, the Presidential Excellence Award, and the Academy Excellence Award from the college's student government. On May 24th 2007 The Chaffey College Governing Board dedicated a building called Muriel M Zimmermann Hall housing classrooms, the dean's office and faculty offices.
Initially pursuing an education at Chaffey College, Ms. Zimmermann earned an Associate of Arts in 1971. Soon thereafter, she enrolled at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1974 and a Master of Science in 1977. Ms. Zimmermann subsequently completed advanced coursework in statistics and computer programming at the University of California Riverside in 1985, advanced coursework in Mycology and anaerobic bacteriology at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in 1991 and a certification in hazardous materials management from the University of California Davis.
