With more than 40 years of experience in science and engineering, Dr. Cunningham has become an authority in his industry. He began his career path at the Battelle Memorial Institute as a principal metallurgical engineer from 1955 to 1962 and the chief of the materials thermodynamics division from 1965 to 1966. With the United States Atomic Energy Commission for nearly a decade, Dr. Cunningham served as a developer and technician from 1966 to 1970, the chief of the liquid metal projects branch from 1970 to 1973 and the assistant director from 1973 to 1975.
Continuing on his career trajectory, Dr. Cunningham served as the deputy director of the reactor development division at the United States Energy Research and Development Administration from 1975 to 1976. Joining the United States Department of Energy as the director of the Division of Waste Management from 1977 to 1978, he went on to hold the roles of counselor of atomic energy from 1978 to 1979 and assistant secretary for nuclear energy from 1980 to 1981. He then attained the positions of director of nuclear studies at The Mitre Corp. from 1981 to 1984 and director of the Mitre Institute from 1984 to 1990. Dr. Cunningham ended his career in 2000, after 10 years as the technical director of the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.
Prior to becoming an esteemed scientist, Dr. Cunningham pursued higher education at the University of Tennessee, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1954 and a Master of Science in metallurgy in 1955. During his time with the university, he studied under the guidance of Eugene Stansbury, who he credits with having had a major influence on him. Dr. Cunningham concluded his studies with a Doctor of Philosophy in metallurgical engineering in 1960 at Ohio State University.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Cunningham remains informed of the changes and advancements in his industry through relevant organizations. He is a member of ASM International, the Tau Beta Pi Association, Alpha Chi Sigma and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society. In light of his many achievements in the field, he has received a number of awards and accolades throughout his career. Notably, he was honored as a Distinguished Executive for Senior Executive Service by former President Bill Clinton. Dr. Cunningham has also been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the East.
