Accruing 50 years of industry experience to his credit, Mr. Blackwell most recently served as the secretary and general counsel for Eli Lilly International Corp. from 1977 to 1990, previously serving the company in a variety of other roles. During this time, he also chaired the Indiana Export Financial Authority from 1989 to 1990. He began his professional career as the assistant auditor of Merchants National Bank in Indianapolis in 1952, remaining in this position for one year before joining Eli Lilly as an industrial engineer and personnel representative from 1953 to 1962. Over the course of his tenure with the company, Mr. Blackwell moved up the ranks to the positions of attorney and assistant secretary from 1962 to 1970 and secretary and general counsel from 1970 to 1977. On retiring from Lilly he joined Faegre Baker and Daniels until 2006. Additionally he founded and spent time as president and chairman of the board of directors of the International School of Indiana in Indianapolis.
Prior to embarking on his professional path, Mr. Blackwell served with the United States Navy Air Corps from 1946 to 1948. After completing his service, he pursued his formal education at the University of Illinois, earning a Bachelor of Science degree m 1952. Continuing his studies, he obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University in Indianapolis in 1956. Following these academic honors Mr. Blackwell was licensed to practice law by the Indiana State Bar and was admitted to practice by the Supreme Court of the United States and the United States Court of International Trade.
Active in his local community as well, Mr. Blackwell served as the president of Happy Hollow Childrens' Camp in Indianapolis from 1968 to 1971, also serving on its board since 1967. He was the director and former chairman of the board for the AAA baseball team, the Indianapolis Indians, he sat on the executive council for Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis from 1972 to 1980. Additional he has spent time with the American Red Cross as chairman of the Indianapolis area from 1979 to 1981 and on the national Board of Governors and the executive committee from 1985 to 1993, and the Midwest Regional Advisory Council as a trustee since 1993, among other roles. Mr. Blackwell has also contributed to the Hoosier Salon Patrons Association as the president in 1980.
Outside of his primary trade, Mr. Blackwell was the president and director of the University of Illinois Alumni Association for two terms, and a member of the University of Illinois and Indiana University Foundations. He was president of the Indiana Standardbred Association from 1994 to 1995, and a member of the Indiana Breed Development Committee. He has been a member of the English Speaking Union, the Indianapolis Zoological Society, Eiteljorg Museum, and the board of the Spurlock Museum at the University of Illinois, the United States Trotting Association, the Economic Club of Indianapolis, Phi Sigma Kappa, the International Legal Honor Society of Phi Delta Phi, and the Hamilton County Community Foundation, among many others.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Blackwell was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Robert D. Orr of Indiana in 1981. The following year he received the C.J. Lynn Outstanding Red Cross Volunteer Award from the American Red Cross. Moreover, Mr. Blackwell was knighted by the French government, and has been selected for inclusion in the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the Midwest and several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Law.
