A retired electrical engineering educator, Dr. Chen is a Richard M. Hong professor emeritus at Michigan State University (MSU) who taught on campus for 40 years and was responsible for producing 46 Ph.D.'s for students from all over the world. First hired as an associate professor of electrical engineering in 1964, he was recommended for the position by one of his former professors at Harvard University and was immediately hired. During his stay, he also served as the director of the electrical engineering graduate program for three years and led the electromagnetics research group, which conducted research across a broad range of topics, both fundamental and applied. Furthermore, Dr. Chen spent time as a visiting professor at Tohoku University in Japan in 1989 and National Taiwan University in 1989 and 2007. Prior to joining the MSU faculty, Dr. Chen was a visiting professor at National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan in 1962 and a research associate in the radiation laboratory at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from 1960 to 1964.
An expert in electromagnetics, microwave technology and radar target identification, Dr. Chen was responsible for developing two long-term research programs: One in the Microwave Life Detection Systems, which is capable of measuring a person's breathing or heartbeat buried under deep earthquake rubble. This system has been further developed and is being used by government agencies. The second research program is to develop a radar system using short wave and E-pulse techniques for radar target identification. This system will provide aspect-independent radar target ID. Authoring numerous articles throughout his career, some of the topics Dr. Chen has covered include electromagnetic radiation, plasma physics and electromagnetic bioeffects. He also authored "Special Topics in Electromagnetics" in 2013. A primary resource for graduate teaching and research in advanced electromagnetic materials, the book covers new methods for treating the interaction of electromagnetic fields with materials, biological applications and radar identification using electromagnetic waves, and supplements its content with detailed mathematical derivation and covers practical applications.
The president of the Taiwanese American Foundation in San Diego during 2009, Dr. Chen is an elected fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a longstanding member of the International Union of Radio Science, the American Association of University Professors and several fraternities. Dr. Chen was the recipient of a Distinguished Faculty Award at Michigan State University in 1976 and a recognized Withrow Distinguished Scholar in the College of Engineering in 1993. He also received an Outstanding Achievement Award in Science and Engineering from the Taiwanese American Foundation in 1984.
Born in Taiwan, Dr. Chen first earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering at National Taiwan University in 1955 as number one of his graduating class. Immigrating to the United States in 1957, he then received both a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in applied physics at the prestigious Harvard University in 1958 and 1960, respectively. Notably, he was a C.T. Loo Fellow during 1957 and a Gordon McKay Fellow at Harvard University from 1958 to 1960. Married to his wife Shun-Shun Chen since 1962, Dr. Chen has four children. He has been showcased in more than 55 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
