A respected voice in his areas of expertise, Dr. Smith has been an active leader in his community
LITTLETON, CO, June 27, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With more than 60 years of professional experience, Dr. Smith has been a professor at the University of Denver since 1972. In addition to his primary role, he held a number of positions with the school, including chancellor from 1984 to 1989, vice chancellor of academy affairs from 1983 to 1984, and the department chair from 1972 to 1983 and 1999 to 2001. He was previously a professor with Hope College in Holland, Michigan, from 1969 to 1972, having been an associate professor since 1966. Earlier in his career, Dr. Smith was an assistant professor with Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, from 1961 to 1966, and a senior chemist with Texaco Research Center in Beacon, New York, from 1959 to 1961.
Dr. Smith began his career as a student at Central College in Pella, Iowa, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1953. Continuing his studies, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Pennsylvania State University in University Park in 1957 before joining the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena as a postdoctoral fellow and instructor from 1957 to 1959. Dr. Smith also holds an honorary Doctor of Science from Central College and an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Denver.
A respected voice in his areas of expertise, Dr. Smith has been an active leader in his community as well. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the Society of Applied Spectroscopy and Sigma Xi. Previously serving as the chair of Churches United for Social Action, Dr. Smith also dedicated time to the board of the Holland Public Schools, the board of commissioners for the Colorado Advanced Technology Institute, the advisory board of United Way Worldwide and the university senate of the United Methodist Church in Nashville.
Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has been recognized for his contributions. A DuPont fellow and National Science Foundation fellow, he was a grantee of the Research Corporation for Science Advancement, the Petroleum Research Fund, the Solar Energy Research Institute and the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation. Dr. Smith has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
